Newbie Intro

Hello Everyone,

Didn't know where to post a Newbie Intro, so here it is.

I have been researching the different Manufacturers and Motorhome models and have narrowed it down to the early GMCs, the FMCs or the early Airstreams.

I am looking at a 1986 345 Limited TB(????) with about 65,000 miles. New Engine installed and I would insist on a pre-sale inspection.

I want to upgrade the interior since I am semi-retired, but still living on a fixed income of about $3000/mth.

Am I delusional to think I can do this or should I look for something newer?

Did I mention I needed to drive the 345 from Texas to Virginia? By myself. I am a 64 years old and am mechanical savvy. (Worked on airplanes, built satellites and can't say no to a good tool sale.)

Hi Stephanie, can't answer your questions but I can say welcome to the forums and hello from central Kentucky. It's good that you're handy with tools, better if you're good with McGyvering solutions. All RVs and travel trailers become your new hobby.

A motor home can be expensive, just the normal operation costs!

Welcome to the forums, stephanie. Maybe find something turn key, so you can start traveling right away. Time flies when your older, and even faster when having fun. The only mechanical skill you should need, is placing your fishing line without getting it tangled, or Kayaking on a peaceful lake in the Sierras. Time is precious at our age, so enjoy it before it's gone. You never know what tomorrow will bring, so enjoy today.

Once you have waded thru that, come on back and ask more questions!
We will be pleased to have you here as I think you have a great history and skill set!
Classics can be cheap to buy, sometimes, but the cost is reflected in its history. A well maintained couch with a ton of receipts will cost more than one without.
My opinion is that a Classic is a strong buy because I seriously think they are undervalued at the moment, and have been for some time. Yes, the floors can rot and the running gear wears out, but the shell and chassis are time served and except the Tag axle on bigger models, everything is available or upgrade-able.

Welcome to the forums and good luck with your search. As the owner of a vintage trailer I can tell you that the bond you make with a vintage rv is pretty strong. Yes you can buy a new or newer unit that may not require immediate "McGyvering", thanks rich, but even the new units will leave you turning a wrench at some point. I love my vintage trailer and haven't had a single regret over my 16 years of owning her.
