My 310 stopped accepting Shore Power - HELP

I was camping last week, hooked up to shore power, running the a/c unit because of the heat, when all of the sudden, everything STOPPED. I grabbed my VOM and check the voltage, wiring, etc. All seemed good, but the 120vac going into my motor home was not powering it up. So, I fired up my Onan generator. That was all good. It provided 120vac and could also run the rear a/c unit, but after I turned the generator off, NO AC voltage at all.

Any one know what I should check, and HOW to do that before I take it to an electrical specialist?

If it is a simple fix, I might be able to do that, but I do need help evaluating why I don't get shore power coming into the motor home.

Thanks in advance.

You may have a transfer switch that allows you to use generator or shore power interchangeably and automatically. Sounds like the shore power set of contacts or the coil has failed, and the relay is just allowing generator power through (the default).

You will have to find this gadget, usually in a metal enclosure with the generator and shore power wiring coming in to it, and supply to the breaker panel going out of it. It's probably defective, and needs to be replaced...I doubt they are reparable..

Search around in the forums for more data--I don't have one in my trailer, so I'm shooting in the dark a little...

My 310 stopped accepting Shore Power - HELP

I had a similar issue last fall.

Bad connection in the transfer switch got hot and melted and shorted the control board.

That purple wire was the replacement for the burnt black wire. You can see the shorted control wire under it.

On my '82 310, the transfer switch is located in the street side rear most outside compartment. It's a black box about 10" square mounted on the inside wall of the compartment. Good luck!

Of note, make sure ACs are off when transferring power or plugging in
Those things can draw a massive surge if they try to kick straight on to high

Check your breakers, but yea, sounds like a transfer switch
Mine is located in the same box as the extension cord

Well, it is fixed. I now have shore power into my 310. First, I want to thank all that replied to my dilema. You guys are awesome.

So, the fix was this...... I started off by determining if there was indeed ac voltage going into the automatic transfer switch in the rear of the 310. I pulled out my VOM, plugged in the shore power and noticed I was not getting ac voltage into the transfer switch, so I started back tracking. I followed the power cable back out of the transfer switch box to a small junction box where it married up to the cable spool. I took the wire nuts off of the wires and measured the voltage. Well, I had no voltage there either. So, from the spool plug to the junction box had to be the problem. I dialed up the ohms on my VOM, unplugged shore power, then started to test for continuety. The results were that the green (ground) wire was fine, the white (neutral) wire was fine, but the black (hot) wire had a break in the spool somewhere. I then disassembled the big yellow 30amp plug from the end of the cable spool and attached it to the short lead going directly into the transfer switch and plugged that into shore power via my 30 amp extention cable.....VOILA.....SUCCESS!!! Within a few seconds, the automatic transfer switch box came to life and transferred the full 120vac into my Airstream 310. Later, I will remove the cable spool and sell it. I have always been leery of those things.

Once again, thank you for all that offered help in this problem,

Russell, in Olympia, WA.
