1991 Airstream 300LE

Brad:

Another one for the database. I purchased in CA in January my 300 LE Classic Airstream motorhome. I am the 3 owner, the second had it for about 8 years. The vin # is 1GBKP37N7L3321239. The number on the metal plate in the engine compartment reads - 1A9JGAP23MJ011320. I called the Airstream in Jackson Center and they said it left the factory on December 31, 1990. I know from the records left in great detail, that the original owner purchased the motorhome new on 10/5/93. In 1994, they had a problem with the engine and Airstream paid for a new engined to be installed which happened on 3/21/1994. The current milage is 79,980, but the engine has 10,000 less on it.

Any information that you can add to the history or the number of 300 models in the database would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

I wish I could help but I've mainly been keeping tabs of the Argosies that get posted here. I spent an evening reading every post and jotting down the Argosy information.

You need to start a thread and post some pictures. The members of this forum really like pictures

1982 24' Airstream Motorhome

I am adding our 1982 24' Airstream Motorhome AS Vin to this list. Airstream has no record of making a 24' in 1982. I have seen at least one other for sale on ebay and they did make a 24' funeral coach. When I contacted Airstream with the Vin they told me it was a center bath which it is not....it clearly is a rear bath with two couches up front. The Vin is

IA9DGAH23CJ009903.

The IA9 (first 3 digits) means Airstream Class A Motorhome assigned to Airstream by SAE
D-Center Kitchen (ours is rear bath)
G-Motorhome Front Gasoline Engine Chevy
A-Semi Monocoque 96" narrow body, continuous curved, shiny aluminum shell, contoured window glass, frames and doors.
H- Length 24' to less than 25'
2- Axle configuration 2 axles
C-Model year 1982
J Site of Manufacture (Jackson Center)
009903 -Sequential Production number
Check digit is 9th postion on the vin and in our case is 3 (not sure what that number does)

First Section (3 digits) Assigned by SAE on the request of the vehicle manufacturer.
Second Section (5 digits) Assigned by the vehicle manufacturer
Check Digit-not sure that that is.
Third Section is model year, site of manufacture and sequential manufacturer number.

The machinations to figure out the check digit (9th position in the vin) makes no sense to me and not sure what it does anyway.

We have no idea how many owners our rig has. We purchased in Florida from someone who bought it at auction from an estate sale-owner had died) and had it trailered to CA. Still making stuff work...almost 2 years later....imagine if it had been in terrible shape.....well maybe it was in terrible shape.....depends upon one's perspective, I guess. We are now working on the door hinges...not easy to replace.

My impression was that they stopped regular production of the classic motorhomes in 1984, but you could still custom order them until something like 1989.

That Vin seems like the DMV vin. I think the Airstream vin starts with 1A. But whatever vin you have, welcome to the MH group....we have some pretty special folks here.

Out of interest, will you be publishing the list so far, and then perhaps update accordingly?

----------------
The 1GBKP3 number is the Chevrolet chassis vin number. The Airstream vin should be located very near by on the same vertical member. It might be fun to also try and decode these chassis numbers. My 1985 270 actually has a lower chassis number ending in 28679.

Airstream VIN

We picked up our Airstream on Saturday- it needs a little work, but drove great the 150 miles home! Here's the VIN: 1A9BCAR23EJ01395

Thanks for letting me know where to find it, Tony- it would have taken forever to find it on my own, it was covered by a Jiffy Lube sticker!

Picture attached!

VIN # Check

I'm sure someone has already posted this, but I found how to check your VIN on the Airstream site:

1979 Airstream Excella 24 ft.

Need help figuring out my vin...
Has only 13 not 17 digits.

Above my radiator the plate shows weight rating overall (12,500) and rear weight rating (7500).

VIN CPS3793302347.

Another larger aluminum plate reads: M24R9V5001, this is located next to the other plate.

Does anybody know which is my vin?

HELP!!!

1979 Airstream Excella 24 ft.

OK, I think I got it figured out. I went to page 1 of this thread and saw all the other 24 footers made in 1979. Their VIN numbers are similar to mine for the 24 ft. mohos listed.

I would like to add mine to the list.

1979 Airstream 240 VIN. # M24R9V5001

Looks like my 24 was the first Airstream off the production line WOW!

Jackpot, Ha! Ha!

Too bad the nameplate dosen't say FERRARI!!!

Also I found the sticker of the dealer whom originally sold it in Seattle Washington in 1979. Coast Trailer Exchange, Seattle, Wa.

Also found a production date stamp 4/29/78.

Frank, is your motorhome a painted Argosy or an unpainted Airstream Excella? Also, I have your serial/vin number listed as being owned by Chris (Huberto) of Monterey CA who bought his in the fall of 2012.

Did you buy Chris's motorhome or do we have a case of duplicate serial/vin numbers?!

Brad

Brad,

I purchased this unit from Chris in March 2013. I'm in the process of restoring right now. My 24 is not painted.

So who is the keeper of the spread sheet for classics? I know Brad was doing Argosys. Can we post the current list?
Thanks!
