Motor swap '82 310
I have been slow to post anything but after getting my 310 home from it's misadventures in IN, I pulled the motor.

After removing the hood, grill, radiator, bumper and everything else from the front, I could actually see the motor! It was a tight fit coming out.

Unfortunately I didn't get any pics on the way out. The photos from Brad were a great guide for my project!

Moved the motor into the garage and onto a motor stand. Found lots of shrapnel when I pulled the pan.
I could see the #5 piston was shattered. Pulled the head and found a valve snapped off and driven through both the top of the piston and the head.

The head is junk. The piston is in a dozen pieces. The rod is bent, the pushrod is bent and the wrist pin has badly scored the cylinder wall. Not much left to work with.

New 502 crate motor on order. I'll try to update when it goes in.

Motor swap 82 310
Yup certainly looks like a giant paper weight. Please let us know the specs of the 502. I'm also curious as to the mileage on the engine and what condition the timing chain and gears are in.
I have an '82 with 140k on it. I wish I had the shop replace the timing chain and gears when they had the radiator out for re-core.

58,000 miles on the 454. Not sure why the valve failed. I believe the PO had the heads off before I purchased it.

looks like you had to unbolt the exhaust manifolds to get it out? Were they stock or did you have headers and whats your plans for that?

Glad to see the coach made it home safe and sound.
Funky LED headlamps. How are they in comparison to the original sealed beam halogens?
Goodluck with the 502. Just wondering are you updating the fuel system or sticking with the carb setup? Which reminds me of the post I posted on your original thread.....This would be a great time to replace fuel lines.....power steering lines.
Cheers
Tony

I think a little JB weld on that piston and head and you'll be good to go!
I visited Timeless when they had just gotten a classic back from the shop that installed a 502. Very nice clean retrofit. Fit well and looked great. Might be a source for a little info.

Wow, those pictures represent a lot of work and creativity to get the lump out. Great work. That's some spectacular carnage. I'm also curious to know what kind of fuel delivery you've got planned for the new mill. Great job so far!

I had the stock manifolds. It may have come out with them on but I am installing a Banks power pack so I removed them for extra clearance.

I am getting the 502 HO. I will be reusing my Quadrajet. Fuel injection was beyond my budget.
The LED headlights were a great addition. I can actually see at night now! I installed them and rewired the headlights with heavier wire and relays at the same time. Massive improvement in lighting.

Peter, I think leaving the manifolds/headers on would make extraction a little (or more likely a lot) more difficult. I don't know that it would be impossible but the removal process involves continual raising and tilting of the engine while at the same time pulling it out the front. This is a difficult process when doing it yourself!
On any of these rigs that still have cast iron headers and if I was in the process of pulling the motor I'd get rid of the manifolds and replace them with a set of good quality headers. Headers definitely help reduce the amount of heat in the dog house among other benefits.
Brad

Any idea what cam you're getting with the 502?
