Sorry Mike, but you just gave me my laugh for the day

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your point of view, you're not the only one that makes what seems like a logical decision at the time that ends up coming back to haunt you

The good news is at least a replacement is available.

Brad

Brad, my 83 has aluminum sheeting in strips across the framing. The aluminum is clad in the same vinyl as what is on the walls. The sheets are 24" (from door to cockpit is 68+", so three sheets, each overlapping the next sheet) as opposed to the full one piece sheeting they put under your 345; then 5/8 blue coated marine ply on top.

AS siliconed the sheets together but the silicone hasn't held up; the only saving grace is that the sheet towards the back sits on top of the sheet toward the cockpit by an inch or so.

Second pic shows sheeting where I cut it and the vinyl cladding. The vinyl is on both sides.

@Mike

I know three people with a spare Keeler!

Cheers
Tony

Tony, that's the first that I've seen where the sheeting was the vinyl clad aluminum. The 86 345 had one long sheet of galvanized laid down and then one LONG sheet of OSB laid on top of it.

It's interesting that there are so many variations in how these things were built.

Time to turn the tables....are you sure "one long sheet of OSB". A 28' or so piece of OSB from the cockpit (sorry I'm not politically correct) to the rear? I'm not saying it couldn't be done....but in 1986?

Cheers

Tony, I was wrong about the long sheet of galvanized. It was actually a sheet made up of multiple panels that were seamed together.

However I'm pretty sure about the one piece OSB sheet. If you look at the video below check out what's in the back ground at the 2:03 mark.

I believe that is one long sheet of OSB for the floor. When I was dismantling the 345 I remember looking for seams in the OSB figuring it would be easier to rip the floor up at the seams. I couldn't find any seams but I did find a ton of nails holding the OSB to the frame along with screws

That is the same way mine is Tony n Brad. Now that I remember, it is vinyl clad sheets running crossway over the frame with seems. Mine is/was factory plywood subfloor, with joints, not OSB. Ive had only a small portion of it exposed but enough to run into a joint or two.

I'm pretty sure my 84 310 had plywood floors but I don't remember if it had galvanized or aluminum under the wood. All I know is trying to rip the OSB from the frame was a nightmare. I had to use a cutting torch and literally burn the heads of the nails and screws off (along with burning a lot of wood in the process!) before I could get the wood decking to lift up.

Drove up into the Poudre canyon this morning, Gods country no doubt! Just gorgeous, took an SUV up not the Airstream. Wasnt sure what the road conditions were going to be. Could have easily made it with the rig it turns out. This is the Colorado I fell in love with way back in 1980 when I was out here doing an internship with the City of Longmont.

Mike, I hope you realize your posts are making my four years to retirement seem like an eternity. As the guy in the office next to me used to say, 'I'm not getting old fast enough'.

We were going to start home tomorrow, leaving Fort Collins headed east through Kansas on US36. Took a look at the weather report and it looks like a serious and heavy ice storm is predicted in the entire eastern half of the state.....BUT, here is one of the coolest things about AirForums, our group of dedicated crazy Classic Motorhome owners, and our Classic Motorhome Get Togethers....I shoot an IM to Vycan, who lives in KS, to get the real scoop on the weather and potential travel hazards... he gets back to me in MINUTES and gives me the local info and recommends we wait it out here in CO for a few more days. THAT my brothers is just the coolest thing ever. What a fine group we have here and what an invaluable resource we are to each other here on the Forums....AND the annual get together gives us all a chance to meet face to face at least once a year and solidify those friendships. When I can tell my son "well I talked to my friend in Kansas and he said........." that's pretty dog gone awesome to me fellas!!

and THANK YOU Vycan for getting back so promptly on the weather, sure appreciate the heads up!

Headed back down to Lyons to wait out the ice storm in KS and MO. A week ago when we were here it was covered in 8" of snow, its all gone and temps are great for hiking along the St Vrain river.. just an awesome park.
