I found the condenser on line. I think Ill go ahead and order one. No telling the last ignition tuneup on the genny. Part number 312-0246 if anyone is interested in jotting that down. Points plus condenser is part number 160-1328-01

Working on the points and condenser is a bit of a challenge on this genny because they are positioned such that you cant get your head (my head) in there to see. Im using my ipad camera to see what Im doing. Anyway, I tested the voltage at the coil and at the other end of the lead going to the points while cranking the genny. Im was getting 10.25v on my meter. I assumed that should be 12v when the points are closed. I scrubbed the points again using emory cloth this time. Then reset the gap and boom she fired right away. Its been running now for over 30 minutes with a 3000 watt load and hasnt missed a beat. All good for now I guess.
I did notice with the camera that the spark seemed to be jumping around on the point contacts quite a bit, Im not sure if thats normal for these old style points or not. Ive got new points and condenser on the way so if need be Ill change them out. Or Ill have them on hand.

The spark is probably moving around because the emery cloth leaves scratches on the points. It will work for now but the points will go out again.
New ones will fix it right.

Its been awfully quiet here in the Classic Motorhome forum here lately...Brad is still plugging away up in the Argosy forum, along with Martin working out the bugs on his beautiful Bella but.......thats about it. I think I know why! Thanks to one certain person out east....yaaaaa...everybody knows who Im talkin about...ITS BOB MILLER!!! Hes getting soooooo much done, so fast, and doing such quality work that everybody elses little projects seem .....well they seem utterly meaningless! THATS IT FELLAS! Thanks to ol Bob, what once was a thriving community here, has been reduced to a group of jaw dropped nincomepoops who are no longer willing to post about fixing their furnace control board, or what tire pressure they are running at, or that cute new coffee pot they bought for their rig!!!!!!! Fellas, its time we stand up and band together, stop this man fROM making us all feel so inadequate in completing our small little projects!!! United we stand devided we fall!!!!!
IM GONNA REPLACE MY POINTS AND CONDENSER IN MY GENERATOR TOMORROW DOG GONE IT!!!! and Im PROUD IF IT!!!!!! (until I need to PM Bob because I screwed it up). SO STAND UP FELLAS.....POST THOSE SMALL MEANINGLESS PROJECTS! ITS GOOD FOR THE TEAM!

get the points and condenser in there, Mike. It will make you feel great and it will run perfect for a few hours..
Did you read that my generator was running shitty because someone before me set the alt switch to 5000. Now, figuring that out was an accomplishment bar none. I was just about ready to dissect the carburetor.
My point is that you really need that genny. I always drive with it running, to keep it cool inside and to run the fridge. My experience with those old Onans has been that they run perfectly until you really need them. I can't tell you how many hours I have spent messing with Onan generators.
I am kinda partial to Honda Generators now, but unfortunately they discontinued the EV4060/EV6060 water cooled models. I owned both and just loved them. I just purchased a pair of EU 2000i's for the trailer and they can also be used for the 310. Very quiet, portable so you can set them away from the MH and enjoy the quiet and being alive (versus dying of carbon monoxide poisoning)

I saw that Post Peter. I dont know if my Propane fueled ONAN has that switch or not. I am assuming that the switch has something to do with the fuel/air mixture for changes in elevation?? Where would the switch be if I have one?

We have lift off on the generator. Installed points n condenser. Fires right up with very little hesitation. 123v under no load, 120v with 1500w load, steady 114v with 3000w load. Very smooth running, no sputtering or signs of missing. Muy bueno. Hope thats all it needed. I will test it while driving and running rooftop ac.

No Idea Mike, on the gasoline powered ones its part of the carburetor.

Welllllll, here's a picture of the old points still in place. This is the view I was working with by sticking my ipad in there with the camera on. I did get the ipad positioned so I had a side view and could see the point gap but its tight as heck in there. I shot a video of how the spark was jumping around on the contacts but havent learned how to load videos yet. It was pretty interesting using the ipad as my eyepad and trying to get the gap set.
Pardon the filth on top of the genny. Thats a bit embarrassing, apparently I missed that area when I cleaned it up. I guess the best news is that you CAN change the points and condenser without removing or dropping the whole generator. Just takes a good deal of patience and a camera or mirror to see what youre doing.

Haha Mike. That post of yours about being blown out of the water by all that is being accomplished is a couple of the garages in the tribe, that cracked me up.
Those big overhauls and polished wheels and all are very impressive.
As well as the depth of experence at play, wow, nice going Bob and Brad, and others.
I finally got myself screwed up for replacing the carpet in the bed/ bath area.
While I haven't done carpet install before, and the area is complicated in shape.
The old piece came out in one piece. Making for a nice template.
Plus the replacement came only in a 12' wide piece. So it was enough for two tries. ��
It ended up going in nicely and i took the chance to seal the subfloor while I could.
So I now have a nice clean and warm new floor in place.
As to getting so much done as many here seem to.
Once I get beyond the trepidation of starting an unknown job, things do seem to come out ok.
Oh to be fearless in these jobs.

Does anyone have a recomendation of what product to use to get some residue from GOOF OFF off my clear coat? I used some of the Goof Off to clean up a couple spots and it has left a very visible residue that I cant seem to get off. Ive used vinegar/water/Dawn, mineral spirits, and WD40 and they havent worked. Anything else I should try that wont damage the clear coat?

I am afraid you partially melted the clearcoat and that is what you are seeing. Goof Off is a solvent type cleaner, like Lacquer thinner and should not be used for cleaning, despite its labeling.

Well dammit.....I thought I had read that it was safe. Dog gone it. Well, luckily they are not huge spots but Ill see them every time I walk by. Thanks for the info Peter.
So, what are safe products to use on the clear coat? Ive used Goof Off to clean up some urethane calk, heavy bug residue...cant think of anything else where Ive used it. What should I use for those applications? My clear coat is in really good shape, Id like to keep it that way as long as possible.
Dog gone it, I really thought that I had read of folks using Goof Off with good results. Oh well.
