Thanks Dave! Ok so water pump grease change at 4000 hrs.. If we convert hrs to miles, and we will assume 90%? Of those miles are highway miles/speed, Ill say a conservative average might be 50miles = 1 hour. 4000 x 50 = 200000miles. I think the math is correct but the assumptions might not be. Even at an average speed of 25mph that would be a grease change at 100000 miles. Rough rough estimates I realize. Idling time, fuel stops, stop n go traffic through small towns, etc etc. I think Ill grease it a bit more often. The pump is new also (5000 miles or so).

Not sure of the source of the document but I would really like to find some detailed instructions on how to "change" the grease in my water pump.

I think the only other automotive application I have seen with a grease able water pump is a Model T Ford. It has a grease cup that you just give the cover a turn or two to lube the oilite bronze bushing. It is an aftermarket pump as Henry never used a water pump on a Model T.

I do have an hour meter in my coach but I'd have to walk out back to read it and dinner is just about ready so maybe later.

I've seen them on industrial engines that run off 4000 hours in less than a year. That manual clip was from an excavator that probably averages 8 hrs a day or 4000 in 2 years. They are pretty common on marine engines. I would guess most get serviced annually. As long as you aren't pumping grease into the coolant or slinging it on to the belts, I'd say a shot every year wouldn't hurt on the type of use we see. Keeping a grease barrier for the coolant is as important as keeping moisture out of ball joints, control arms, and tie rod ends by greasing them. Mileage or hours might not be the determining factor.

Triumph sports cars for years had greaseable water pumps. I think that changed sometime in the 60s.

I've replaced a lot of bearings. With few exceptions they don't wear out. The failure is due to failure or contamination of the lubricant. Often from neglect or failure of the seal.

Yeah; If the Triumph 3500 V8, which was basically two Triumph slant 4's welded together had a grease able water pump, it didn't help, as the drive gears would shear, leading to failure.......one of many faults that the Triumph 3500 had.

It still amazes me that BL already had the brilliant Buick designed 3500 but Triumph decided to design their own V8 of the same displacement.I guess that's why my Dad bought a new 1969 MGC.

Cheers

I don't think their V8s had greaseable water pumps

I think Triumph (BL) felt designing inhouse was better than out sourcing. Hindsight might have suggested otherwise!

Ive been slowly putting together at set of "on-board" parts. Since I have the Isuzu diesel I thought it was essential for my peace of mind while on the road to who knows where. This is my inventory, what would you fellas add?

Alternator
Voltage regulator
Continuous duty 85amp solenoid
Alternator belts
2 lower, 1 upper fuel filter
Oil filter
Thermostat
1 spare air line for front air bag
Valve cover gasket
Upper and lower radiator hoses

Mike

So what would you add considering its the turbo diesel?

Ball joints...sorry, couldn't resist.

Good list....spare front door lock
windshield wiper (just one)
assortment of fuses
spare portable compressor that can be hooked up to your air ride and
powered by the generator to air up the bags as it hurts to drive with
them down.
Cheers
Tony

Almost better to ask what got other stranded before or didn't , since they carried ...???
#1 Starter
#2 fuel filter
#3 Radiator stop leak
#4 assorted fuel lines
#5 assortment of electr wires fixes.

List of auto part store locations
Do you ever make a mental note when you pass an auto part store when you are on the road?

Interesting point Peter. I do carry all the usual items that you n Tony mentioned as far as small repairs are concerned. Electrical repair items, bottle jack n cheater, that sort of stuff. I guess I am wondering about items that might be specific to running the Isuzu diesel. It seems to me that list of spare parts may be a bit different than the gassers. Since parts are much harder to obtain for the diesel. Plus, things like the starter, alternator, and other parts are so much more expensive, I have to draw the line somewhere. I waited this long just to search out the alternator and voltage regulator because I thought I was going to be dropping $600+ on the alt. Ended up getting it at a huge discount.

I think a starter might be added to the list, who knows what they cost. Just kinda wondering what the other Isuzu diesel owners would carry as far as parts for their motor and rig.

LOL!
One of my fun stories that needs a discerning audience is about my 1984 Mercedes 190D. I saw it for sale on Ebay at a local Donation place, and was interested to note that the description stated that the vehicle had "an ignition problem, and should not be driven" I went and looked t it before the auction end and the guy said that the ignition issue was that once started, the engine would not turn off... This obviously effected the bidding and I won her for $580. The issue turned out to be a split vacuum hose to the fuel shutoff valve and took me 2 mins to fix! The "Valet Key" that it came with would not open the glovebox... I ordered a new set of keys from Mercedes and upon opening the glovebox I found a service records and receipts from one family going back to the day they bought it! 6 years and 50k miles @ 33mpg later, I still have her and is the best $500 bucks I ever spent!
Win!

WOW! Love stories like that!!!

I guess the reason I ask about "on board parts" is that I just dont have the mechanical knowledge as many if you guys have. Ive turned my share of wrenches through the years but only on the most basic of engine maintenance. I have even less knowledge of diesels and then throw in the fact that these Isuzu 6bd1 s are industrial or marine engines with limited parts suppliers, well Im out if my comfort zone pretty quick. Ive learned an awful lot over the past three years, thanks to you guys and Google. Sooooo, I guess I am wondering if its a good idea to invest the money up front on carrying these spares and what parts are the smartest to have with..........and Im sure it will happen like this. Ill invest $1500 in spare/hard to get parts and break down in the middle of some swamp in Louisiana, it will be a $5 dollar part Im not carrying
