I went to an O'Reilly's last month to get oil for the truck. Shelves were basically empty. A few quarts here and there. Most were sewing machine synthetics for the new autos. I usually use 10w-40. Only one jug of Pennzoil 10w-30 and some quart bottles. I hadn't used Pennzoil since 1977, bought and used it anyway. On top of that, when did they start making 5 quart jugs instead of 4 quart jugs? Yes I grabbed a quart bottle also. Well, truck hasn't blown up with Pennzoil nor with the extra quart in the crankcase!

I saw a few of those 5qt jugs today, too bad they weren’t Rotella. The Isuzu in my 310 takes right about 3 gallons of oil. First time I changed the oil it surprised the heck out of me, I’d never worked on a motor before that held that much.

Soooooooo bummed out!
When Lynn and I got back from Colorado last Sept. I parked the rig out in the drive as usual and within a few days I changed the oil in anticipation of our annual trip somewhere this winter. Well, things got in the way of our trip and the rig hasnt moved since the oil change. Now both of us have been in and out of it over the past months, Lynn doing a thorough cleaning and I’ve been in and out doing small maintenance items and one of them was installing a new leather wrap on the steering wheel. Well, we were out there today giving it a good exterior wash and as I got around to the front and washing the windshield I noticed a HAIRLINE CRACK IN THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDSHIELD!!!!! I am absolutely totally stumped as to how it happened or even when it happened but it had to have happened while it’s been sitting there. I’ve got no friggin idea how this could have happened and as I said, I was even up in the drivers seat for several hours installing that steering wheel wrap because it had to be laced and it took me awhile. There is absolutely no evidence of a chip or mark on the glass, no tree limbs that have fallen, no hail, no NOTHING. WTH could have caused that???? My son visited a month ago and we were at times all out there sitting and visiting and didn’t notice anything. I had to look real hard at it to even tell that it is indeed a crack. It starts at the center post a couple of inches from the top, heads towards the center and then curves 90° downwards to the bottom…
I’m sick at my stomach.
Ok so. ‘82 310……does anyone know if they are even still available to buy new?
I know at one time that there is a company called Coach Glass that one could purchase from but I thought I had read on here that they are not an option anymore.
I sprayed water from the hose directly on it and it doesn’t leak right now. We were planning on a short trip in the next few weeks, should we nix that idea?
I would assume it will get worse. It seems to go all the way to the center post to the bottom. I’ll take a closer look when the sun isn’t so directly on it. It’s such a fine hairline crack that it looks more like a scratch than a crack. You can’t feel it by running your finger over it or your fingernail doesn’t catch on it inside or out.
Total bummer. No idea how this happened.
Any info is much much appreciated. Kinda makes me sick.

I hate to here this I always worry about mine sitting in the driveway. Have you considered having a auto glass place look at it and try that sealant that they use on cars and trucks. We had a windshield fixed once and could not see the repair until you find a windshield. My insurance covered the repair over a replacement. I hope the windshields are still available. Good luck

Coach Glass
Yes the windshield's are still available along with the seal.
Coach Glass is the supplier of the glass and seal.
We recently had to replace both due to both being broke with some road work and a junk hauler!
Safe glass company was used by our insurance to source and arrange the replacement. We had to take it to an installer in Murfreesboro. Safe glass only sourced the glass and arranged the install for the insurance company, they did not do the install.
It took a little work and thanks to Streem3, was able to help them to source the correct glass and seal needed.
Also High Sky has both glass and seal listed on their web site as available.

Thanks fellas, I’ll give my insurance agent a call. I guess on Tuesday with the holiday. I was online last night and found that HighSky lists them as in stock. I’m still just baffled on how it happened. I ve heard stories through the years about heat causing glass too break but not around here in central Illinois. I think they’re urban myth anyway.
Ya know, walk out and finding a flat tire is one thing but finding your windshield cracked is another.

So Chris,
How did you start and go about the process of getting yours done?
I only have the one side that needs replaced but I’m assuming that 40 year old gasket can’t be reused and the gasket is all one piece isn’t it? At least the perimeter of the gasket. So both sides of the windshield need to come out to replace to replace the gasket? Doesn’t make any sense to me “not” to replace the gasket regardless.
I guess what I’m asking is, should I go ahead and get prices and installation details before I contact my insurance agent……should I go ahead and contact Safelite to get a price on the possibility of “repair”. I don’t remember ever even having an auto related insurance claim in my life so I’m a bit at a loss. (Plus I’m still so surprised and bummed out I don’t think I’m thinking straight)
I don’t mind driving to where ever I need to in order to get this done and done right. Obviously this is a specialty and not any old RV supply joint will have the skills to replace the glass.
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Coach Glass supply Airstream so you can get the screens and gaskets via any Airstream dealer (I had been supplied installed by my local dealer)
That said, Coach Glass supply to a sister company RV Glass Solutions (same ownership) who have 7 main locations and (they claim) 3000 service locations. ( https://rvglassexperts.com/rv-glass-locations/)
The website shows the 0800 number to get a quote.

We had the right glass broke for about a year, so when the left got hit, we put a call into our insurance. We have Cincinnati Insurance group. After we made the call, Safelight did the rest. I made it an issue that they replace the seal, due to that it was probably 30 years old, and yes you will need to take it to a shop to have it installed. They need to have all the tools and an inside location for the install.
The complete parameter of the frame is aluminum, so no rust, just a chance of aluminum oxidation.

Cracked windshield
Mayco-
I guess this started with me when I discovered, what sounds like from your description, the same hairline crack - started center, took a 90 and went to the bottom. If yours hasn't made it there it will as I watched that crack start small and finally make it to the bottom in a few months. I decided to replace it at that time.
Sourced the glass and seal through Coach glass, and a specialty glass installer 45 minutes from our home did the rest. It's vital to find a shop that does this work on motorhomes regularly. I will say that if you do one side I would do both. I noticed our new glass has more green tint to it, so one side only would not have worked and I never even considered one side only. You absolutely have to have a new seal - the old one won't work.
I had to take it back for a seal adjustment (no charge) after one year, and I now have a few new small chips ( ) that the glass company said wasn't worth messing with. I guess it comes with the territory when you have this much glass and a lot of crap flying right at it.
Anyways, it's not cheap, but had to be done. Let me know if I can help or answer other questions you may have.
Good luck!

Thanks for your info Jerry. First time for everything I guess. I’m just glad I don’t have to wait on some 310 being parted out to get the glass and reuse the old gasket.

May as well chime in on the subject: I would confirm with the installer that they will be using a proper glass to rubber sealant when they set the windows in the new seal. Due to body distortion over the decades AND the use of the levelers just the new seal will not guarantee a watertight seal. Not to mention the known fact that especially the cockpit is a "special" handcrafted part of the Classics.

RV Glass Solutions is definitely the place to go. They provided all the new glass for the 396XL when I did it last year. I agree with the previous post on the Alaska trip……go now and you’ll be sure to finish off both windows. Mike, this is a job you can do with a friend, but you will probably need an indoor facility when you get the windshields out, both of them. Some body work, fabrication might have to be done to the frame from corrosion etc when the glass is out. It’s a simple seal, the glass is installed bottom first, then the sides and finally the top, about 5 minutes install each side once the prep work is done, Regards, Bob

Called my insurance agent this morning and he sent over a rep from a local auto glass company. This guy wants to replace the one side without replacing the gasket with new. Well I could tell pretty quick this guy wasn’t gonna touch my rig. He was full of $&#*.
So here we go. That rubber is one year shy of 40 years old….it’s GOT to be replaced. By the time they monkey with getting the existing glass out there’s no way that gasket is gonna be tight. I hope this doesn’t turn into a fight with my insurance agent.

You might want to let him try it and when he rips the gasket installing the new windshield you get one for free, the added bonus is he gets to pull the other windshield out to replace the gasket and then you could work a deal on doing them both . If memory serves me right the gasket is about $300.00 Regards , Bob

Im wondering if putting on the windshield cover when parked would help reduce this risk. My cover is black and seems like it might trap more heat than reflect. I also added reflectix on the inside of the windshield to help keep the light/heat out.
Might even be best to recreate a cover from something reflective?

I’ve used reflectix for years on the inside of the windshield when parked. It really does help keep the heat and cold out of the inside of the rig. I’ve wondered if I need an external cover of some sort. Hell im guessing at this point.
I’ve turned the replacement of the windshield over to Safelite’s RV Specialist. They are coordinating the replacement of the glass. They also deal with my insurance company. They said it will take up to three weeks start to finish for the whole process to be completed. I don’t know at this point if I’ll need to drive the rig somewhere to get it done…..im assuming I will.
We have reservations this coming week up in northern illinois at a COE campground for a few days. Right now im planning on going ahead and with plans. About a 3.5 hour drive one way
