My current hangup is less about finding a shop and more about how long does it take to get a transmission built.

And I'm certainly not going no warranty, it'll be at least 18 months!

Unless BobM can find you a better deal, you are looking at at least $3 to 3.5/mile. Not what I would do. I would call Jasper tomorrow am and see what they have that comes close to a TH475 replacement and get it shipped asap. I know of 1 Classic that has put on many thousands of miles with a Jasper.
That way, you can get back on the road after your break and dream about putting in a heavy duty 4l80e or 4l85e in a year or 2.

Thanks for the advice Peter, it will be heavily weighed.

Part of the equation is that I'm well aware that this years driving will probably total about another 3-4000 miles max, and then maybe a couple thousand next spring close to home, and then we'll likely switch full time rigs to a larger disposable SOB and downgrade the airstream from full-time home to shiny toy. And then I have all the time in the world to upgrade to a 4l8xe and sell the th400/th475 to some hot rodder.

I'll give Jasper a call in the morning and see what they've got, and see what this mechanic I'm talking to comes up with, I know he was reaching out to at least a few different suppliers. The Jasper installer locator unfortunately turned up fairly slim pickings in the area, some of them I've already called and been turned down at. More to come for sure.

Dropped the motorhome off yesterday. Talked with the shop owner and he's got at least two suppliers lined up for a legitimate TH475 with straight cut gears that can be installed with full warranty. More to come once they pull the old one and figure out what happened to it.

Sorry, I figured you'd just give me a phone number, I'm pretty well down the path of replacing here, but the cities are Carson City NV to Fort Wayne IN if you want to let me know for my curiosity... For next time...

Whatever happed to the trans, it must have been instant and catastrophic.
Be interesting to know.

Definitely seems like an old school guy that knows his stuff. Better mechanic than the RV shop that told me "we don't take anything without an OBD-II port" or the one that told me "we won't work on anything with a carburetor... or anything that had a carburetor when it was new" (how either of those are relevant when a transmission needs replaced, I have no idea).

As for the communication center, a temporary field command post has been set up in the airbnb we got (ski resort bnbs are super cheap when the slopes are closed )

Note the antenna on the lamp

I thought everyone from Silicone Valley and the Bay Area moved out there for Covid? Surprised you could find something.

Hey Rob, are you still in the Tahoe area? If so, did you enjoy the earthquakes?

Yep!
Left yesterday and started driving east, but we sure felt that magnitude 5, it lasted quite a few seconds, very strange feeling for this Midwest boy

After a couple annoying false starts with companies that backed out, finally have an order placed for a TH475 as of yesterday

New reman TH475, new trans cooler, 3 year unlimited mile warranty (yep, really), $3080, should arrive in 3-4 weeks

For the time being we drove home to be here around 5 weeks or so, which was our baseline plan anyway

I don't know if you remember the Indiana earthquake back in the nineties (broke a lot of windows across the state), but that was certainly interesting. I was actually running around on the roof of my parents house when it happened... like God was letting me know I shouldn't be up there!

Oh, and no surprise, the shop did confirm the transmission fluid is "packed full of metal"

Not that I really suspected anything else, but removes the tiny nagging thought about it being the overdrive.

It'll probably be a couple weeks before they can yank the transmission and find the actual failure point, but I'll post any pics/info as I get them
