The more I think about it you're probably right.

It might be that if they are even side to side they are OK. I would imagine driving with flat bags and hitting a pothole might mess one of them up pretty bad though

Mine had a 5/8 shim on the curb side spring. Also you are only cutting off 6 to 7 " of the spring. I was using the weight on the rear axle, almost 9,000 Lbs. for selecting the springs, wrong move! Having removed the 2 springs the ride is about right now. The HD springs also are thicker! I'm also in the top hole of the down straps the spring beam bolts to!

Some where I had seen, that if you do not have air in the bags, Max speed should only be 45 mph! Also have herd of broken air bag spring beams, would bet due to driving without air in the bags!

Do not get the spring number in the photo!

Chris, ok, so what you are saying is that the springs need to be within specs in case of an airbag/air system failure. The 45mph speed limit after failed bags would really only apply if the springs were in good condition. Besides damage to the frame and/or Airbag frame (transverse rod) the tag axle (if present) would also take a major beating and probably get destroyed

Nancy there was very nice, and $125 later my 4 pieces of plastic and 2 pins are in the mail...

That's 50% more than I paid for 4 timken bearings... But for what sounds like a 2 person company that can't decide on a name, I guess I'm just glad they're still in business 30 years later

They do have a website by the way
https://superide1.com/index.html
And they put superide in the invoice
But they answer the phone american carrier system
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good diagrams on website at least

We just lucked out that they are using the same bushings and pins on their new systems...

I only saw a couple systems on their website, the manuals and diagrams definitely looked 80s era

I think I could order a whole new system for my airstream and it would be on stock, identical to what I've got now

If it ain't broke I guess

I’m also looking at springs since the PO seems to have driven with flat airbags for undetermined period of time. The generator side spring is bent down and the whole thing leans about 1.5 degrees. Springs must be more than just a pivot point, right is bent and left still slightly upright curve

If you figure out the correct part number for spring, I will be purchasing at soon for the 270 MH

I did measure the spring pack, between 4 and 4.25 inches

I looked more, and I think the forces are balanced between the front half of the spring, and the rear half of the airbags. If the bag was mounted right to the axle, the spring would do nothing, but the spring isn't really cut in half, the airbags mount towards the end of the spring, essentially replacing the rear shackle. What percentage of the force goes each way will depend on the mechanical impedance (link) of the bags vs springs, so the springs do take some load. Then when the bags fail they get the **** kicked out of them, because the empty bag allows the whole body to come up and the drop down on its bump stop, putting a huge shock on the system.

When working properly, the bags should absorb the high frequency components, and the springs the lower frequency, I think.

That's my theory anyway. 2 engineering degrees, but neither mechanical, so take it for what you paid for it. No warranty express or implied.

I would say your right on the money Rob!
Just an Old Tool and Die maker agreeing with you!

Does yours have the 5/8" shim under the springs on the curb side?
From your photo, it don't look like it.

Now for the right replacement part number...

These springs are 9/1 leaves, and I can't find a part for that listed for a P-30, it jumps from 8/1 to 10/1

Since the rear half is getting cut, only the front length measurement matters. I found these, and they seem to match all measurements perfectly. So I think airstream used a pickup truck spring. Looking really close at Chris' pictures above, the profile of leaf lengths on the back of the spring looks like it might have been longer too, it's different than the 26" of the new one next to it. Plus the weight rating is a bit higher than the 10 leaf anyway. Guess I'll take the plunge and report on how they fit.

Thanks Chris!
Sure wish I had your tool and die skills, I saw you casually turning your own seal insert tools, jealous

I didn't see any shims on mine. Though maybe I should put one on my driver's side directly under my 180lbs of woodstove and washing machine

That's a good analysis and makes sense. I haven't seen the 310 in years so I couldn't remember what the physical relationship was between the springs, the axle and the airbags.

Sounds like you're on the right track

For working on the road, just ordered a dual-modem mobile router. I think it is outside the consumer tier and is entry level enterprise grade hardware, designed for applications like busses and passenger trains, complete with a service contract.

https://www.mobilemusthave.com/Ultim...dle_p_168.html

It has two cellular receivers, each of which takes two sim cards for 4 sim cards total.
It then picks the two strongest sim cards at any given location and you can set up what's called a speedfusion bonding server between them. For example, if you have decent verizon at 50mbps and decent AT&T at 50mbps, you can bond them and then broadcast a wifi network that will have 100mbps speeds. Then if one cuts out you have redundancy, and speeds might slow back to 50mbps, but won't cut out entirely, and your video call presentation with your bosses bosses boss continues uninterrupted.

more super-user features, such as rejecting close but congested towers in favor of further but less congested ones, access to LTE bands most phones can't access, and so on.

It can also receive a campground wifi signal if there happens to be a good one, and join that with the cell speeds as well.

It also has a GPS receiver, making it a DIY lojack

Been researching this for awhile, excited to try it out.

Totally overkill for probably almost anybody, but it's not just for watching netflix, a rock solid internet connection is required for both of our jobs, so for us $1.5K for a hotspot on steroids plus multiple cell data plans is a necessary expense to get on the road.

Looks like that should work Rob. I think AS specked out a lighter spring for a better ride. That is why we have to deal with a negative spring arch!?

Think you balanced out the load!
With the old (heavy) genset, refrigerator, and 125 lbs propane tank on the right side, thinking that is why I had one!? Looked to me it was there from AS.

How is your monthly charges on that system your installing? Inquiring minds want to know

The service contract and speed bonding server license is $16.50/month

My grandfathered unlimited verizon plan is $65/mo
Just signed up for a 1TB/mo AT&T plan for $140/mo
(You won't find that plan on the AT&T site...)

Those are the primary
As a backup, also have a google Fi sim card that piggybacks off the wife's cell plan, that's $10/gb used, and it will do either t-mobile or sprint

We'll see down the line if we need more data plans added on, hopefully two unlimited plans can do it, usually we use about 300-500gb/mo

None of the unlimited plans are actually unlimited anymore, all have one or another string attached

At 130lbs each the UPS guy was very glad to be rid of those

Just realized the rear shackle gets welded to the top leaf, but I don't see it on the superide parts list.

Chris, do you remember what you did there? Looks like a generic part I can probably measure and order.
