Let's Talk Portable Gas Grills

(I'm asking this specifically in our Classic Motorhome group because this relates to our storage challenges, etc.)

Guys, now that I'm finally able to start using my 280, I want to buy a portable gas grill to take with me. I've narrowed it down to the "Weber Q" and the "Coleman RoadTrip".

I'm leaning toward the Weber because I heard from someone that the Coleman rusts, but the Weber (not unlike our Airstreams) is made of aluminum, so it doesn't rust.

So I'm wondering which you guys prefer and why. Also which size model, keeping in mind storage size, but also having a big enough grill area to cook enough food for a few family members.

And finally, where in the motorhome do you store yours? In one of the outside storage compartments I assume?

I do like that you can buy a zip-up nylon cover for them to keep them from getting other things in storage greasy and to keep it from getting scratched, etc.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had the Coleman. It rusted. I set it beside the street. It disappeared.

Have WeberQ1200. Awesome grill. Only problem is when the wind is blowing hard.

I've rebuilt my little table top weber a couple times and drilled holes on the top so it doesn't get so hot on the lowest setting when I do ribs and woudn't trade it for a gold plated other brand. I can keep the temp between 175 and 600 with the mods. Love it. Had it 10+ years and no reason for anything different but you can spend 500 on a portable if you look hard enough.

I also own that coleman but it was blue and it's rusted. Not even sure if I still have it but looks the same as the photo.

We nought that exact Weber with all the grill attachments for full outside cooking when necessary or desired. We also bought a cover which has been great to keep grill from getting dirty when not in use. We store it in the outside storage compartment. It runs off the propane tanks easily and folds up quickly and easily as well. Very happy with ours.

Weber Baby Q Gas Grill

I've owned my Weber Q 1000 for ten years. It's a great grill. My grill doesn't have the taller dome top with the temp gauge built in. My grill also doesn't have the folding wings. The wings aren't very practical because they are flimsy, can't hold much weight and therefore won't stay level when you place items on them. I have an AS 325. It has a large storage compartment behind the tag axle. That's where I store my Q. The taller dome models will be harder to find a place in your 280. If you can live without the dome temp gauge, the 1200 model, I'd buy the 1000 model with the lower dome. Either way, the dome top is easily removed so you could store the dome top and the grill bottom in two different places. Overall I love my Q 1000! Since I've had mine, the only item I have replaced is the ignitor.

We love our Q 1000. 4 years of hard camping and like new. Weber knows how to make this stuff. And it stores easily in a number of different spots.

Tap,

we have a 10-year old "Q" that has done well by us, and a really handy duffle style bag to carry it in.

if you go for the Weber, a new one will have the built in thermometer that ours does not.

we also sometimes carry a small Cuisinart grill inside the coach. it's OK, not great, but adequate for the two of us, and takes about half the space.

ymmv

Weber Baby Q

I have used a Baby Q gas grill for 6-7 years and it has been a great grill except for a couple shortcomings. It has one tubular burner which does not allow for indirect cooking. My baby Q on Low setting is too hot for some of the items I cook and it takes awhile to get the grill up to cooking speed. I bought the Teflon coated griddle to fit on the Q and it is perfect for bacon or cooking eggs over easy.

To eliminate the shortcomings of the single burner, I am looking at the Cuisinart Chef's grill CGG306 with two 10,000 BTU burners which should allow a quick warm up and then indirect cooking or warming. I'd say I will make the move within the next several months.

Anyone with the stainless Cuisinart CGG306 want to chime in?

You will get many opinions here probably.
Weber Q for nine years now. I have a smaller pancake tank hooked to it with a hose and POL fitting. I carry a spare 1 lb spin on cylinder for a backup.
The cast iron cooking grates sear quickly and cook equally well.

I LOVE my O-Grill! Super portable, great grilling temperatures and so easy to use! Takes up minimal space in my TV! Comes in a couple of different sizes and colors. Very attractive. I have the smallest, and even this small grill will easily grill for four people! https://www.amazon.com/Grill-500-Por.../dp/B00CF2EAT8

I have the Coleman and it hasn't rusted. However, it's much larger than I want it to be. I keep it under the dinette and haul it in and out at each campground. I don't have any other storage areas where it'll fit.

My goal is to get rid of it and debate on getting another one. We really don't use it all that often and have generally mastered broiler steaks so may not replace it at all.

+1 for Weber Q

Another vote for the Weber Q. I have the one with the tall lid and thermometer. I like the folding wings...I set all kinds of stuff on them. Just don't fold them inside until the grill cools off

I also bring a Weber Smokey Joe, which is the little version of their BarB-Kettle charcoal grill. Hard to beat the taste of charcoal cooking, but the gas models are so convenient. I got a 20lb bottle that I bring along just for it.

I just saw one today with a bright blue lid. When I got mine they all came in the beige like color. It's fine, but I like the bright colors you can get on the new ones.

The Coleman might be fine....I can't really say. But I've had my Weber for probably ten years and it's been great.

Cheers,

Just bought a coleman used for $20. The wheels had fallen off. Bought 18" of threaded rod and put them back on. Works great. Best value at $20 plus the $6 threaded rod.

Another vote for the Weber Q...

After several attempts with other well known, expensive brands, I finally wised up three years ago and got the Weber 1200 with the temperature gauge. Best thing I like about it is that it does not go out in the wind as several others were prone to do. I carry a smaller 3 gal. tank with a couple of 1 lb green spin ons as back up if necessary. I have been very happy with this grill... pay your money... make your choice.

As a newbie, rookie, very green...I too would like to know how to convert a weber Q to work off the trailers propane. After reading so many positive reviews about the weber, I think I'll pick one up. Thanks much!
