I thought I just needed brakes??? My first major expense

In an earlier post I said i was going to change my brakes then I decided to have the transmission pan gasket and filter changed in addition to adding new donut exhaust rings. Here's what was found during donut ring replacement. Yep not good but getting fixed. Here's more pics of todays progress.Tomorrow Im having valve cover gaskets replaced as well as ALL 1981 hoses while the transmission is out for repair. My plan was to replace both my A/C's this week but looks like thats on hold.

I would want to know what caused that case to break. The break looks new on all of it that is visible, not like a slow moving crack.

Maybe the bolts were loose?

Fwiw, that Turbo 400 shouldn't cost a lot over a thousand bucks unless it has an emergency brake hanging on the back of it...

They were used extensively and still should be reasonably common, I would hate to see the OP hit for 4K for a replacement.

So far parts only $ 350 for L&R calipers, shoes, pr of shocks and turning the rotors. Me and my dad put those on. His mechanic friends are doing the rest. Not sure of price yet but I'll keep you up dated in prices. Will post more pics later today when I go ck in the progress.

As far as the cause if the transmission break not sure what happened. Only thing I can gather is it's always been there. I've driven it less than 2500 once I got it back to Texas from Az and have never once hit a curb or fell into a pot hole.

I would take the transmission to a competent welding shop & see if they can repair what you have.

Amazing they can do that kind of precision welding. Always wanted to learn how to weld but never took the time. Im a retired carpenter and have worked on homes that were owned by professional welders. Their work always intrigued me.

Any idea of what caused the case to break the first time ?

Were there bolts missing between the transmission and the engine?

Hi, a missing dowel pin could cause this to happen. I can only see the left side dowel pin in your picture so I can't tell if the right side is missing or not. Also I believe that your starter is also on the broken side, possible problem there?

Glad to see that it could be welded back together, sure hope it bolts back up cleanly. Certianly a strange damage to find with out clear reason for it to break.
Keep a good eye out as it goes back in for issues that could have caused the crack.

Cheers Richard

If I were to simply guess at what caused the break, I would say all of the bolts but the two in the broken ear were very loose or missing.

Of course I say this with not a lot of information.
