I think I figured it out...the new alternator I got was not clocked correctly, so I took out the casing screws and rotated it to the correct position. I had read to be carful to not pull it too far apart or it would damage the brushes so I was careful. Guess what, I broke one anyway! The way to DI it is to take the halves apart, move the brushes back and insert a pin from the outside, get the alignment correct and put it back together, then pull out the pin. I presume a working alternator should fix my problem!
