Entertainment Center Removal

I'm the proud new owner of a 1979 Excella Motorhome and would like to update the radio to something a bit more recent than the 8 Track. However, I can't figure out how to remove the Entertainment Center to get behind it. I got inside the doghouse and can feel the screws protruding that I assume secure it, but can't locate the heads. The previous owner did a great job recarpeting the driver/passenger area and perhaps covered the screw heads? I'd rather not tear into the carpet unless I have to. Any insights would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome!
Pictures would help, but for most of them you just grab and pull straight rearward, then reach around and disconnect wires. If what you feel is bolts, they are just holding a metal plate on that is part of the doghouse. Two separate pieces, the entertainment center comes out first then you can get the rest of the doghouse off

Magnet18 and i were just talking about those Airstream Entertainment centers. Lot of things have changed technology wise since they installed them, but a nice new face plate would allow for lots of add-ons, like gauges, switches and USB ports. Airstream stopped installing them mid 1983 with the new doghouse style.

I think they are well worth saving and improving.
This is what I did to mine some 20 years ago, when I restored a 1979 just like yours.

Got It Out!

Thanks everyone. I went out first thing this morning and pulled the radio and 8 Track out. The radio came right out, but for some reason they put two phillips heads screws on the back of the 8 track which were a struggle. I won though, with the help of a multi-tool. The trim plate came out, so now i have access to everything I need. They certainly didn't build these to be upgraded. Now for a nice double DIN radio/nav/backup camera. Maybe I can improve the ergonomics a bit too. Thanks again!

If the 8 track and radio decks were not damaged during removal, I would be interested in them for my Argosy 24.

Kid, sure thing. You pay shipping and they're all yours. I didn't damage them when I took them out. There may be a piece of trim missing from the radio, but I can't tell. It works, I listened to it all the way from the Springs to VA. I don't know about the 8 Track though. PM me with your address.
