Glad to bring some humor to an otherwise grim day.
If I could impose on the collective brain trust a moment.. I’ve decided to go the flatbed route and trailer it home, and I’ve been urged to pump up the rear bags (allegedly replaced before parked 10 years ago) and have no idea how.. the rig is an hours drive away and I don’t have any manuals on the beast yet, though I’ve been vainly searching the threads in a round the clock marathon. So.
1. Any manuals to be bought, begged, borrowed or?
2. Are the rear bags filled from the electric pump only, or is /are there schrader valve(s) in the system, also?
3. And if so, where are they, and where is the pump control? Manual switch or auto?
4. I plan on splicing into the fuel system with a marine outboard tank with manual prime bulb. I’ve eyeballed the supply and return fuel lines as 1/2” ID. Can anyone confirm?
5. Any feedback on the Sumitomo tires? My research had me locking in on the Goodyear G647 RSS Mud and Snow tires, but I just got ‘downsized’’.. effective last week.

Scott, here are a couple of links to the 84 owners and service manuals. I have no idea how close they would be to yours but the service manual does have a section on the diesel engine.

You might get lucky and find that the compressor fires up and fills the air bags when you connect a battery and turn the ignition to “on”. The compressor should be wired to a pressure switch nearby. Not sure where that is on a 280. On our 310, it is the left rear outside storage compartment. Our air tank is behind the rear axle and has a Schrader valve at the bottom that lets you drain the water from the tank, you can also use it to air up if the compressor isn’t working. I have had to unscrew and replace the guts of that valve a couple of times. Great writeup, can’t wait to hear what you have to fix on the next tow truck.

I have manuals for an '81 if you send me your email in a PM.

There should be a 12 v pump in the rear left outside compartment. It should come on through the ignition switch. Air to the air springs is controlled automatically through leveling valves. The tank should be just forward of the pump and there is a Schrader valve on the bottom to drain water and fill the system with an external air source.

If you splice into the fuel system you must do both feed and return lines. A diesel flows much more fuel than it consumes. Your small tank will return to the main tank in no time. You don't need a bulb to prime and bleed the system as there is a manual bleeding pump on the right side of the engine at the lift fuel pump. I believe the lines are 3/8" but don't quote me on this. The hard lines on the engine are probably metric. Also the return fuel carries a lot of heat from the system.

I have only run the GR647s but they are spendy. I would put off buying tires until you have the coach ready to use. They go bad from age not wear.

My air tank also has the schrader valve on the bottom. Bring a portable compressor if possible and hope there are no major leaks in the air suspension system. You should be able to air up the bags from there. The front bags should have valves on the bottom of each bag or better yet an air tube leading to a schrader valve for each. Good luck. As in “spare parts”?
Sooo, at the risk of getting ahead of myself.. my 280 is a rear bath and I’d like to re-arrange it as a rear bedroom, preferably island queen but I can live with a sideways layout if needs be. Looks like I’ll have to relocate or replace / relocate the f /g/ b water tanks. Any BTDTs? 280 Center bath parts? Horror stories?

IMHO, it would be easier to buy a 310 gasser and put your Isuzu diesel into it.

I agree with Tony on finding a 310 rear bedroom. I have always wanted a 310 rear bedroom over my 280 rear bath, but it is what it is. I've thought about a conversion and I've tried to layout plans for it. Way too many changes would be required...tanks, plumbing, electrical, etc. and still no wrap around rear window! (I'm still jealous as hell over Tony's and Mike's 310's).

Every project I've done to my 280 has been proceeded with a quick "analysis" of how long will the MH be unusable. I always tell myself that the MH was built to be used and enjoyed. If it would take six months to redo ALL the plumbing or a few weekends to find and fix a few leaks in the bathroom, I fix the few leaks in the bathroom simply so that I can enjoy the MH. I've been afraid that if I were ever to take on such a project as converting to a rear bedroom, that I may never get it finished and back on the road.

However, that being said, Mark, if you do convert to a rear bedroom, let me know how much $ you want to do a second conversion on my MH!

Now that the polar vortex has eased a bit, I’m getting ready to take off the engine cover, start the cleanup and prep it for starting. I read the there is a fuel shutoff solenoid valve in the system and wondered if anyone can speak to that, as in where it’s located?

Mark, maybe I can clear this up. What number post in my thread did you see mention of a fuel shutoff solenoid? Ill go back and read it and hopefully find what was said. Like I mentioned, I'm not aware of a fuel shutoff solenoid, only the manual one on our dash. (For the Isuzu anyway) Other than the solenoid on the started motor Im aware of two others on our rigs. One that combines the batteries together, and one under the doghouse for the glow plugs. Ive not seen or heard of one in our fuel delivery system.

Got the rear bags up to 85 psi before the mini pump started to smoke. Will drop in a battery tomorrow and see if the internal pump fires.
For the engine cover off and the walnut carcasses cleaned off. Shoulda taken a picture. The injection pump linkages are tight, going to soak them in MMO. Accelerator linkages are tight too. Gonna smell minty fresh.
