I have a 1987 345 with TH 475 and 454 Power plant. I have read some threads from some folks in the past who have converted to diesel and thought I would try and get some information. Are there any "kits" available? What are the best and least complicated engine / trans combinations to go with? Is it worth it? I recently bought a used 1987 5 ton F600 dump truck for several specific projects around the place, and once I'm finished I thought I might look towards that as my donor. The cab and body is pretty ragged anyway, and I got in it CHEAP! It has an inline 6 Ford turbo diesel and allison automatic. Thoughts?
We looked into converting to a Duramax/Allison powertrain. Appeared to be a solid case of diminishing returns. Better off to simply rebuild / replace the 454.
If that is the same Ford turbo 6 that was in school buses it has a severe lack of power.
Godspeed,
Trent

If you go with a GM 6.5 diesel with the mechanical injection you won't have to deal with the computer and the wiring it requires. Also should be a drop in with the mounts of the 454.
As for power my 6.5 with an after market intercooler and the timeing kicked back a bit had 192 hp at the rear wheels.
