I don't know the etiquette for continuing a long ended thread or starting
a new thread on the same subject. Perhaps I should have continued.

For continuity that seems easier to these eyes. Just post a new reply. Plenty of older threads get resurrected this way, and are fun to read IMO.

No big deal, but handy to post that there is a new thread IMO, as done earlier.

Good luck with the repair! Love those older motor homes.

Never, ever back up in unfamiliar territory without your spotter! I learned this lesson about four weeks ago!

Ouch!

I am also looking into improving the backup camera. I have seen
some cameras that mount on the sides. You can get some security
cameras that operate well in really low light.

Pete.
I probably posted this here someplace, but I made my own side view camera in the Pass. side mirror:

The original convex mirror was already missing so I installed a off the shelf wide view convex mirror and I had enough room to install a side view camera. It is great to have when idiots try to pass you on the right when you are changing lanes to the right. This one is too close to the body so it wont tell me when my ass end is going to hit something.

That looks really useful.

Do you have the regular backup camera? Do you use the original
video display or have something newer?

Pete.
Mine is a 84, and it is all do it yourself for that year.
I have a 2nd camera on the center rear marker light

and I have a dash switch that selects which camera is active.

Both cameras are hard wired to a aftermarket dash radio with flip up screen

That is a nice setup. I was thinking of eliminating the large rear
camera and doing something like what you have. But perhaps I
should maintain the original look and keep the large camera mount
and just replace the guts.
