I have noticed over time that a dry heat or moist heat will still cook the pizza or me.

Calif is on fire from one end to the other. 19 fires 25 miles north grew into 4 large fires. I have seen about every type of aircraft, fixed and rotor, pass over in the last few days. Have you ever seen a DC10 tanker fly over the mountains at low altitude? And some Four engine prop Big Bad Bombers!

Watched a storm pass over the mountains to the west night before last. Lightning was awesome. However, it started 45+ fires to the north.

Dean, we had rain just about every day in July here in central Kentucky and August is starting out about the same. However I think I'll take rain over heat and fires!

Weather is crazy at the moment; we had a water spout (tornado over water) about 3miles offshore from my house yesterday early evening.

I'm back home from a hot, smokey week at the ranch. The wild fire situation north west of the ranch looks grim. The Fork Complex fire and the Mad River Complex fire are each about 30 miles from the ranch. They are about 12,000-14,000 acres each and between 7-10% contained. And many more fires north and south of these.

I really do need to get comprehensive insurance on the motor home!

I thought I would be more safe at home, but just got this emergency email from my county (actually, not an issue for my neighborhood)......

"The National Weather Service has issued a RED FLAG WARNING for San Mateo County from 2 p.m. today through 11 a.m. Friday.

A Red Flag Warning is issued for weather events which may result in extreme fire conditions within 24 hours. During these times extreme fire safety is urged for all residents.

While currently there are no fires in San Mateo County, there is a threat of dry thunderstorms during this period. These dry thunderstorms combined our on-going drought conditions make the county particularly susceptible to wildfire.

Well, I was in Denver a few weeks ago. Pretty nice place and that's about as far east as my political posture would probably allow! LOL

Spoke to my parents on Saltspring Island the other day, no where near as bad as California, but no real measurable precipitation since the begginning of May, no camp fires, lawn mowing, operating any machine that could cause a spark......and I have only had to water my grass once.....the day before we got 2" of rain.

I knew was going to occur as the West coast really didn't have a winter at all. Dafodills bloomed in Febuary while the East was at -20+ Celsius.

Stay safe Dean

Cheers
Tony

Well, every time I go to the ranch, I have a list of things I want to do. One of those was to replace the drive shaft U joints and carrier bearing on the motor home. But with the hot weather and threat of fire, I thought it might be best to leave the drive shaft connected!

It was 112 degrees in the motor home when I arrived last week. When its that hot the roof A/C is useless and with the voltage drop and amp rise that I get, the A/C compressor shuts off. If I start cooling down the mh by 8am then I have a good chance of keeping the A/C running all day. I do have Reflectix in all the windows as well as the windshield drapes drawn. This time is also wrapped a roll of sun shade material over the front of the cab.

I enjoy taking scrapes of materials and re-purposing them. I found a table top to use on my BBQ, but then I had to add a heat shield between it and the BBQ because the heat was melting the table top! I also added a light so that I can see when I'm BBQing my steak...I'm a late eater.

We have another owner at the ranch that has an old Airstream trailer. It usually is siting in the storage lot, but this time it was out on a space.

I rode my RZR out back a bit and spent a lot of time listening to fire dispatch on the radio and watching a variety of aircraft and helicopters flying back and forth to the fires up the way a bit.

I spent August thru September back in 1996 working in Ketchum Idaho and I remember there were a lot of fires during that period. I found it really weird to be able to smell wood smoke while indoors and the skies were always hazy with small bits of ash floating in the air.

I can't imagine what it must be like where you're at with the fires so much closer.

Be safe!

This motor home has been sitting in the storage lot at the ranch for a very long time. Not an Airstream, but I think it would be a fun project to work on. Usually this stuff sits there until the owners die or move away and then we have to spend money to get the crap hauled away.

Just not the same working on some SOB, Dean. I have done it a couple of times and I missed not being able to share the joy and misery with the people like yourself and all the other fine folks on this forum. Despite all the issues and problems we have with these Classic Airstreams, once you dig into some other coaches 30+ years old, you wish you were working on an Airstream.

I picked up a couple of shiny "aluminum looking" things for the motor home!
