Exhaust leak

I ran around this morning getting the necessary parts to fix my exhaust leaks at the header collector flanges. Of course the old studs will be fun getting them out...I already have broken one of them!

Insurance Scam?

A week ago on my way to Lassen Volcanic National Park, I pulled into a rest stop about 15 minutes west of the park's north entrance. A young man and woman in an older Camero came speeding into the parking lot, pulled in two spaces away and slammed on the brakes. The man came over to my driver's window and said that a rock flew out from my Motorhome and broke their windshield. I got out and took a look and talked to the man and women. Not much was making sense. They were calm and polite and they told me what happened. I listened to the details of what they were saying and I asked them to repeat a couple of times some of what they were saying.

We exchanged names, insurance companies, policy numbers and license plate numbers. We shook hands and they departed. What I saw of their windshield and much of their story did not add up. They said they were following other cars and they were traveling the opposite direction from me. They said as I passed, a rock flew out from my MH and broke their windshield. Well, there was a chip in the middle of the windshield and a small mark on the hood showing that a rock did hit the car from "straight" on. The upper passenger side of the windshield had many large cracks in it. They said the rock did all this damage.

Ok, so a rock at some time did hit their windshield but definitely did so from straight on and this rock could have in no way did the other major damage to the window. I believe it would be almost impossible for my MH to throw a rock and hit a car traveling the opposite direction and hit the windshield straight on. The woman also stated that they thought someone was shooting at them, so this means that they did not actually see a rock shoot out from any vehicle and actually hit their windshield. Also interesting is the woman passenger already had their insurance papers in hand as she got out of the car. Gee, any normal person would be fiddling a bit in the glove box to find their insurance info. It all sounded very fishy to me. With in 20 minutes (cell service was poor in the mountains), I received an email from my insurance company that a claim had been submitted.

Bottom line is my insurance company denied their claim before I could even give them a call today. The agent agreed with me that it would be doubtful that the rock came from my Motorhome. I can't imagine that with mud flaps a half inch off the ground and a nine foot overhang from the rear tires, that the MH could ever throw a rock that could cross lanes, hit another car straight on and do the damage that was done on that car!

My agent told me anyway that I'm not responsible for rocks on the roadway and the only way I could be liable for a thrown rock is if for example I was hauling rocks and one fell off or my tires were all muddy and full of rocks and I didn't take the necessary precautions to clean the tires, etc.

Bottom line is, pay attention to everything as you are driving and pay attention to the other parties story. Ask questions to clarify what they are saying. In this case it all added up to a fish story and I was simply a convenient target!

That's why they (everyone) should buy glass insurance!

Drive the Alaska highway and try to get someone else to pay for your windshield.

Thanks for the great photos of Lassen NP. I have never even heard of it. It is now on my bucket list.

Gosh, you sure do a great job of maintaining and improving your dad's mh. He is smiling down from above.

Last August I bought two Fantastic fans and hopefully I'll get to install them soon. It will only be 110 degrees up north today!

I got the fans online from CampingWorld at a great price. I wanted to get the curved trim for the inside before I install them so I called Fantastic today. No questions asked...they are shipping the curved trim right out to me! Now that's fantastic!

Do, we met some folks that drove the Al-Can last year and said the old war stories about windshields and tires are mostly bunk these days.

The Alaska HWY is much improved, but can still break your windshield.

The problem is, the locals drive full speed all the time. (long distance between jobs, short season)

If there has been a road patch, the gravel will fly, and even if you slow down and move to the right, its a "hit and miss" affair. Pun intended!

Still a trip everyone should take at least once.

Getting back to your air injection pipe issue....

I just found a set of BBC cast manifolds in my storage, and took the injector tubs out of them... they all came out using the following method...
1/ Lotsa penetrating fluid...
2/ Heating the casting on some of them...
3/ a 9/16" flare nut wrench with a vice grip over the top to stop it opening... see pic below..
4/ A good firm tap with a hammer rather than just pressure!

Vice grip trick!

Oh, also, I found that this manifold from a TBI injected 454 from 1990 also has these removeable injection tubes....

Out!

Roof A/C mystery...

My new Coleman AC that I installed last summer stopped working last month. The compressor wouldn't start. I was suspecting the start capacitor so I purchased one while I was in town. I discharged the three capacitors, removed them and tested them with an ohm meter. They all checked out ok. I installed the new start capacitor and PTCR device anyway. I then disconnected the compressor wiring and checked the terminals for opens or shorts and all tested ok. I reconnected all the wiring and decided to give it another try. The compressor kicked in! The unit is running and cooling fine. I still have no idea what the issue was/is?

A/C is still working fine today, but not knowing what the problem was bothers me! I painted the shroud the same gray color as on the MH. I didn't like that hunk of white up on the roof. I painted the top with Henry's 587 white roof coating to reflect the heat from the sun.

I rolled the Henry's on with a small roller. Didn't tape off to make straight lines...just rolled on to top...only I will see the white when I'm up on a ladder. Last summer I painted my 20 ft ATV trailer roof with Henry's. It's gone through a Redding summer and winter and is holding up very well. And I am a believer in the stuff. It can be a 100 degrees out and you can touch the top of the roof with your hand! My test on the trailer went well and I can't wait to do the top of the MH with it!

I pulled out the ignition switch this morning and will be replacing it with a new one. I was trying to follow the steps that have been outlined in some other posts here but I couldn't get it out. So I googled it and discovered that for my switch I have to turn the key to the ACC setting, insert a paper clip and then turn the key slightly counter clockwise then the tumbler pulled out!
