cole3444 1983 Airstream 310

Picked up my new to me 1983 Airstream 310. It was fun bringing it home, had set in garage and was covered in dust. Driving in the dark looking out of a dirty window with one headlight out. Passed two county deputies and they did not bother us. Will be picking your brains for info on getting it ready for my grand children to camp in. Just needs some TLC.

Congrats on the purchase. Just bought a 1984 310 this summer. Poured tonnes of cash into the mechanical... hopefully not the start of a money pit.

With the age our classics have on them, its not surprising that some rebuilding and especially appliance/ component replacement is required when putting them back into action.
Adding to age is the reality that many are found and are being brought back from a long slumber, this only adds to the effort of getting them prepared for life on the road again.

But it is so worth the effort! They are unique and very appreciated in the motorhome/ RV world. As well as being a true pleasure to travel in.

While I value and try to contribute to the exchange of technical details of the care and feeding of our rigs.
I think it would be fun to share more of our travel / camping adventures in the classics. Ala Mayco, Mike and Lynn do an enjoyable job of sharing their trips with us. And this helps to round out the picture Classic motorhome ownership nicely.
Big mahalo to Mayco for the travel fun!

My New Years resolution is to get signed on as a contributing member, try to figure out how to post more than one pic at a time, and to share more of travel in and enjoying using my coach.
Looking for more ballance here, it's not all repair and projects, as valuable as that info is.
What do you think about bring more travel adventures into our corner of the site?

Sorry Cole, for the hijack. Very nice find you have and a welcome addition to the diesel loving contingent here.

Happy Holidays, Richard

No problem tevake, more post the merrier. My 310 had a major service job prior to me buying it by my diesel mechanic. He was the one that told me it was going up for sale. It has the Cummins 6VT 5.9L with the Allison tranny, trying to get use to no park. Unit has had a few updates already. Just got to figure out how to get the exterior cleaned up from sitting in storage and putting LED lights in. Thanks everyone for your input.

It's got a CUMMINS? Wow! So apparently a PO did a swap from the original Isuzu. It has the Turbo Diesel badging so it indeed started out as a Diesel from the factory. Unless it was some one off special order from Airstream.....that's pretty unique. Do you have any documentation from PO about a swap to the CUMMINS. Regardless, it has an interesting history. Very cool! Interested in hearing more if you've got access to its history. Thanks n good luck with her.

Mayco. the PO said the paperwork is in the folders he gave me where the original owner had Airstream install the Cummins. Will look and see if I can find it. It is a professional install per my diesel mechanic.

That is very very cool. Good on ya! Is the Allison an at545 or a 6 speed? Congrats on your find, it should be a great drive train for you.

Merry Christmas!
Thanks for the engine pic!
Very interesting....
That is another way to do it for sure!

I spy with my conversion eye.... LOL...

1/ Earlier Cummins engine... I think its a 1989/1991.5 engine. VE Injection Pump, and non intercooled. Just like the one I just bought!

2/ RV style exhaust manifold, with Turbo mounted low... but whats really interesting, is it appears to be mounted 180 deg to others and the norm with the exhaust turbine to the front, and intake to the rear! The intake tube appears to be fabricated...

3/ RH High mounted AC compressor... I think the Alternator is located below it.

Interesting, 1st gen Cummin's are noisy so some sound deadening around the doghouse maybe in order.
Top right in pic; power steering pump?

That is the AC compressor top right.
On my donor engine the Alternator is there, and AC compressor is bottom right.
The AC compressor has to be moved, as it will foul the RH chassis leg.
So, on Mel's conversion, he moved it up to the mid RH side, and the others are mounted top left or right.

On these engines the PS/Vacuum combo pump is on the lower LH side of the engine below the Injection pump. pretty much same place as the PS pump on the 454. What I REALLY like is that it is driven off the crankshaft gear set, so not belts to fly off and leave you with no brakes!

Windshield Wiper Solution Container

Has anyone had to change out their wiper solution pump. PO bought one but does not match the old one, are they still available. My container also has two wires connected to two screws at the bottom side that were corroded and had to cut the wires. Does anyone know what these are for. Looks like a new style tank will have to be mounted and was concerned about the two wires. Attached pics of pump and connectors.

Thanks Keyair, trying to get the washer going and trying to figure out how to get the new pump mounted. Found a chunk of ice in it the other day and was lucky it did not bust.
