Checking out tool compartments is always a bad idea, gets me spending too much money on tools, Bob doesn't realize how soft of a mark I am!

I noted your reference to maybe one of the Excella hatch covers might be useful in my battery drawer rebuild. Looking at the video confirms my understanding that at least on the Excella chassis, the hatch covers were hinged and not fixed to the front of a "pull-out" drawer as in the Classic models. also, it does appear that I can salvage the front alloy panel and use other remaining draws as a template in the event that it is beyond repair. anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I seem to think this Airstream has been featured elsewhere a number of times but just in case for Members with deep pockets..

I think point was that the curvature of the panel is the same either way, just remove the hinge and attach it to the drawer

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think the curve symmetrical. I think the upper section is somewhat flat.

I'll try and get a cross section picture this afternoon.

Rob, did you get my email with the picturs?

Brad

I have an approximate drawing of my 84 battery box.
I cant say for sure the curve is accurate, but it does have a flat section at the top. Red is closed and blue is open.

On the subject of battery boxes

After having my battery drawer over run the stops and fall out on the garage floor, I got a friend to make me a new one out of stainless steel. It so happens that he is a genius when it comes to fabricating. The lockable compartment that never made any sense to me was omitted in favor of leaving space for two more batteries.
We took measurements including locating all holes (because stainless is a pain to drill). Everything was programed into the water jet to do the cutting.
All the bending was then done, and the corners were tacked. Used some cushioned rubber floor mats for the bottom. A new piece of aluminum was rolled for the face, and Huck riveted to the drawer. The original latches were reinstalled.
And, as always, the pictures load sideways.

There is a long list, just search for "Airstream"
There is not much information yet, not even a picture.
Apparently someones private auto collection.

This one is just a few towns away from me. I'll try to get on it, and see what I can find out. Charly.
