Good catch! Here are some good pictures of a 1985 290 with that front dinette.

This brings me to a question.....

I have posted a thread on Thor possibly making a new Class A aluminum motorhome with the knowledge that it would most likely encompass one length; and yet back in the day you had 20'24'26'28'29'30'31'32.5'34.5'35'37'. Agreeably Argosy started with the 20-26' in 2' increments which I can barely understand but what was Airstream thinking when increasing size in 1' increments from 28-31'. Four models on the very same platform seperated by 1' and only 1.5' to the next size up, the 325. Some of these models like the 290 and 300 are very rare with I think only 4 or 5 300's made in the late 80's, early 90's. It just boggles my mind that you could make a business case to do that and still make money.

I do understand that the basis P30 Chassis is short and then rails are added to it to accomodate whatever length needed but the permutations and lack of commonality must have driven the factory workers nuts. I guess it would have made for at least an interesting work day as you'd have to keep on your toes but the different jigs for interior work must have covered all the walls in the factory.

A bank manager would shoot you for even suggesting this in todays market.

Cheers
Tony

Tony,

I know we've kicked this around a lot. The only way I would see them back in that business would be finishing existing bus shells like what they do with the Interstate Class-B units. Unfortunately, Thor sold their bus division in 2013 so they have to go outside the company for the empty bus chassis. For example, they could buy empty units from Blue Bird and complete them to Airstream specs. Yes, they would be expensive but cost has never been an issue for new Airstream buyers. Since Blue Bird stopped making the Wanderlodge, it would seem like a great fit.

There's a airstream 270? For sale on eBay
I went to Germantown wis. To look at it...
The ebay add says the interior is "rough".
That's accurate! There's about 3 different floor covering (mind you it only a 270)
It's dirty to say the least and there's no title ( only bill of sale) the trans is shot and according to the plates it haven't been licensed since 1999 the owner of the shop says it runs? A didn't ask to here it run, any motor that's sat for for that long is trash in my opinion
Here's the good news... The windshields (left and right) are good and the rest of the glass is good the skin only has a few minor blemishes the front bumper is good and it has two large side awnings and one on the back window as well
Just thought I should put this out there it's a "best offer" sale. I offered $1400 figuring the windshields were worth that (I need at least the driver side one for my 345) but my offer was rejected, I won't bid higher but maybe someone here could use it for parts or maybe some brave soul will take it on as a project

Just have to factor in at least another $2 per mile to get it "home".

I don't think the year is correct. The styling looks like a 1979 Excella 28. The fabric is definitely from a 1979.

I also think is is 28'. The 270 never had center twin beds. The 270's had a rear bath and two fold out sofas in the main cabin.

Caveat emptor!

This same unit has been for sale for almost three years. Outside and inside looks very rough. If anyone buys it you'd better take along a few spares.

Don't be surprised if the mileage is off.

Cheers

Agreed Tony

Worse it seems to get more damaged each time it is listed, I remember when I first saw it (maybe 2 years ago) the damage around the upper rear wasn't there, now they are saying the door is damaged as well. Must be getting vandalized (because there is no way it is driving).

..... You should be careful when you make offers like that. It is only 2,215 miles from me to you...... not much further than I have to go for groceries.

What's with the Frankenberry Airstreams for sale?

Last year I did see an Airstream trailer grafted onto a Ford Class chassis for sale but at least it was well done, in great shape and wasn't trying to pretend it was something it's not.

Not even good for parts.

Cheers
