So I gather that the early 90s were a transition period for airstream, which makes me wonder if the coach above is based on a P30 or freightliner chassis. and if the later is a preferred choice.

Seems the seller is not very familiar with the unit he is selling. Any input here about that vintage would be welcomed.

I can see #2 & 3, but power? I find that hard to believe. Granted the pick up might not and I say might not be as good but for sheer power nothing beats a diesel.

But if I had a spare 454 hangen around I would do the same thing if it needed a new engine.

I was thinking the same. I've never driven an Isuzu but I'm pretty happy with the Cummins. Being in the back its nearly silent. The mileage seems to be much better than the 454s claim also. But then I've never driven a 454 powered Airstream. If they are anything like the V10 powered 28 footer I rented, my 36 foot Cummins would kick its butt.

I have a front cummins and I am torn between wishing it was in the back and therefore quieter and grinning like an idiot as it throbs while I drive down the road.... Although more than once I have delighted at the fact that it cuts down on conversation up front.

I'm a big fan of diesels myself, and have an Isuzu, read Duramax, engine in my GMC 3500 dually pickup.... huge power and a wonderful engine. I was specifically referring to the 30 year old Isuzu unit that would have been in that MH as opposed to putting a cheap, quiet and powerful 454. The only thing against the 454 with TH400 that I have in my 345 is the fuel consumption, because otherwise it is a great unit, but then again my 1994 34' LY has the 454 with TBI and 4L80E transmission, gets 10 mpg (US gallons) with 70 mph cruising, and I really don't think could be beat if you added up all costs of running, even compared to a Duramax and Allison.

I have heard that the problem with the Ford V10 is the gearing which is simply wrong for motor homes. The 460 was a great unit, but heavy on the juice.
