I'm forced to part ways with my old girl, I figured it couldn't hurt to put it on this thread. I'm curious what you guys think a fair price would be given that it's not running.

I bought a 1993 Fleetwood Bounder 5.9l Cummins/Allison that wasn't running at the time, but was told it ran well. They were asking $11,500 initially, but ended up selling it to me for $1,500.
$250.00 later and a bit of elbow grease and she's running, moving and everything else works, including the 75K diesel generator.

You'll get whatever you're offered.

Definitely a good deal considering you got the diesel generator as part of the package. Will the generator fit in your Argosy?

This is your diesel conversion project, correct?
With that Cummins in it and running, probably about 40K
With a new 454, probably about 20-30K
AS-IS not running sell ASAP, probably a 2-3K.

The right person could get excited about that project and value it at 20k as is, but the odds that person is within distance to tow it home, AND that that person is buying right now... slim to none.

You might come out better by paying a shop 10K to get it running, or finding somewhere to store it until you can get that Cummins in

If the water pump is the only issue, It might be worth it to have it towed to a shop and put back together, if you can find the right shop. Most buyers will be put off by the logistics of dealing with a basket case, never mind the fact that they won’t know what shape the drivetrain is in until they buy it and fix it. We have an ‘84 310 in similar shape. If I wanted to sell I would ask $15-$20k in its current running condition. Even though it would have lots of potential with the front end dismantled like yours, it’s hard to imagine getting much interest above $5k with that problem.

It's listed as "shipped" but no tracking information has been provided. I don't know if you noticed but he sold six at $40 and then changed the auction to $50 and appears to have sold them as well. I just noticed the same seller had one new one that sold for $60.

Surprisingly there is currently another used one from a different seller that is listed at $80 but it includes the little slide lever.

Lost a decimal point somewhere, Bob...

7.5Kw is an order of magnitude smaller that what you would need to run a smallish neighborhood.

75Kw units tend to be painted yellow, have their own heavy duty trailer, and are usually labeled "CAT Portable Power"...and run on lots of diesel fuel per hour...

Last ones I saw were powering a night market, and were remarkably quiet...probably had a dozen of them parked in a long row and running the vendor booths.

Going back to BCCade's question about selling his disassembled 31' Moho.

I'm with Waipo Rim in thinking you would do much better completing the water pump repair and get it running in order to sell the coach.

I do wonder if there was a major overheating event as the pump went out, if so that would add to the scope of the repair. Can you tell us what led to starting this repair when you did?

If no overheat damage occurred, then you are half way there in getting the pump replaced. It's getting to it that makes it a big job.
While you are in there getting the radiator recored or replaced, and replacing hoses is a good idea too.

Getting these repairs completed and having it running would go a long way in getting a fair price for the rig.

Where in Cal is it located? Perhaps there is a local classic Moho owner that could help you find a mechanic to help in getting the job done.

Thanks very much for the feedback/advice guys. I've got a pretty full plate at the moment so I was thinking cutting my losses was the best option, but with seeing that it's virtually worthless as is, I might as well tear into it and at least see how bad things are before throwing in the towel.

To elaborate, the water pump failure did lead to an overheat, either I have a faulty temp sensor/gauge, or it's located somewhere where the lack of water flow caused it to read artificially low. I was able to get it pulled off the highway and shut down in less than 30 seconds of the first symptoms (power loss and intermittent pre ignition). Upon further reading it looks like I was operating under some bad advice from the shop it had been towed to who wanted to replace the engine and some of the older related components for ~$10k.

should be OK. Back in the day of iron engines warping was not such
a problem with overheating. Typically you would blow a radiator
hose and the water would boil and steam would gush out and cover
your windshield with antifreeze. The mess was hard to miss. It
also smelled of antifreeze.

As long as you stopped when this happened you would just replace
the hose and you would be fine. With modern engines that have aluminum
heads and blocks an overheating situation can cause serious warping
problems. That generally means a new engine. Mechanics these
days make that assumption since they don't generally have any
experience with old iron engines.

I would just replace the pump. New hoses would be a good idea.
It is a cheap fix and I would be surprised if the there were any
other serious problems. It would be a shame to scrap the unit
for a repairable problem.

That maybe true for many applications of the venerable 454, but not in this application. The 454 in the P30, survives in its own little bit of hell on earth, with poor airflow on a good day, and it makes lots of heat itself. Throw in a 100+ degree day in California and you'd better make sure the radiator is clean as a whistle in order for it to survive.

If the OP has had an over heat episode leading to power loss and preignition, I have very little doubt some form of engine damage has occurred; how much, hard to say, but head gaskets would be the first to go.

That's the first '82 Turbo Diesel Ive seen for sale since we got ours. Lots of '83s and '84s.
