Carpet or wood floor?
Hello all;
I am new here and just bought a 1987 345. I am just beginning
the process of restoring my new beauty end to end. I am planning
out what i want to do.
The floor looks pretty beat. I was considering carpeting, something
similar to what is on the engine dog house. What was the original
floor covering?
Alternatively I am considering manufactured flooring like Pergo.
However, it would be much more slippery when walking on as
I drove along.
I hope I am not asking a question that has already been discussed
but I could not find it in the history.
Thanks,
Pete.

Personal choice
Plenty of flooring discussions on here if you search. Personally I prefer wood flooring. Most RV manufacturers install carpet because it is cheap and easy to install when the coach is empty. In my experience, carpet traps dirt, moisture and odors. You will be amazed how nasty it is when you remove it. I have installed floating wood floors (one oak and one cork) in my two previous Airstreams and plan to install another one this weekend. It is attractive, easy to keep clean, and fairly easy to install. Slipperiness depends on the texture you select.
Laminate is another option, as is glue down vinyl. Up to you...

Our original carpet did not look all that bad but it was truly foul when I removed it. We installed thick click together laminate with no underlayment or adhesive. It's solid as a rock and removing it would be easy. It is colder underfoot than carpet but I just wear socks in cool weather. Much easier to keep clean. I am always the driver but so far my wife has not gone sliding in it when we are underway.

How does the wood flooring hold up to sand, mud and such?
We are always camping in places where we track stuff into the carpet and I am use to vacuuming and using the carpet cleaner at least twice a season.
I always figured gritty things will mar up a wood floor finish quickly.
BTW, I am not one to sit still camping, so I may be in and out of the camper 50-100 times a day, good exercise for me, but not the floors,

I think it depends on your requirement. Do you have kids? Plan muddy walks? The original coaches had carpet. You could have options, such as an oak galley floor in the kitchen. Our 250 had this option.
We installed marmoleum, which is hard wearing and easy to clean. It suited our family, but the colour was too light. We're going to switch to a karndean type oak product, high end vinyl, but waterproof, comfortable on the feet and easy to clean. It has textured wood effect, so is pretty realistic. It's not wood, but has plenty of upsides and works for us. We have it at home.

Although many of the hard surface floors are attractive and they are all easy to clean, I prefer the warmth and acoustic qualities of carpet. That being the case, I replaced the carpet in my 345 with a close to original carpet. Keeping it clean in the main traffic areas was a chore so I bought two 7' runners in a complementary color. I fabricated aluminum strips 2" wide by the width of the runners and drilled and countersunk 5 holes in each and screwed them down through the carpet and pad. It keeps the runners in place but can be removed leaving no evidence behind. Just another approach.

I don't feel that carpet is a good choice for any RV. In fact I think my choice would not be wood either.
I admit both look very nice initially - but not really too practical. You can get some very attractive sheet flooring these days, and I think that is the most practical.
We had wood in the central galley / bathroom area of our previous RV and carpet in the bedroom and lounge.
It didn't take long for the carpet to look pretty scruffy even though we tried to look after it and never wore shoes in the trailer. We did have a dog at that time though.
The wood strip floor looked great initially but water splashes/spills etc in teh galley area got down into the wood and it eventually developed black mold stains at teh joints and had to be removed.
Our present AS has carpet at each ends and sheet flooring in the galley / bathroom areas. I wish it had sheet flooring throughout - maybe in a plank floor pattern!

Another option is this flooring. It has a hollow PVC core, so it quite light and resists thermal transfer; will not rot or absorb water. It is super fast to pull up just in case something happens as it just clicks together. It comes in stone textured of even faux wood finishes. Also quite reasonably priced.

Plastic flooring that looks like wood, as several people stated. If you want the warmth of rugs, put in a few throw carpets and notice how dirty they are after each camping trip.

We have carpet up front living area, wood in middle, carpet in bedroom. It's your choice. Every option has a trade-off. It depends on what's important to you. We like carpet, but not in areas where spills etc. are apt to occur. On the other hand, liquids can get under any wood or click lock type floor too. Sheet flooring solves that problem, mostly. Some look ok. We chose good quality carpet and wood flooring combo. If it gets nasty, we'll replace. Wishing you good days and satisfying results with your 345.

Carpet vs Hard Flooring
We bought our '94 already remodeled. It's carpeted everywhere except kitchen and bath area. If I could change one thing, it would be the carpet. It's OK in the bedroom, but filthy in the entrance area, in spite of throw rugs and careful entry. Just the nature of camping. I'm interested in the cork and the marine teak floors mentioned above. I just dread the thought of removing all furniture and cabinets to replace it.

Remove walls? To remove carpet?
I have a "new to us " 2000 land yacht 30 motorhome. We want to remove the carpet. It appears that it was built with the entire floor getting carpeted and then walls and fixtures installed. The carpet runs under the shower, walls, etc. Do we have to remove entire interior? Other suggestions? I am interested in vinyl or battleship tiles. We camp extensively in Fl. And sand is a constant issue. Advice appreciated..

You got THAT right!! It IS pricey but I justified it by telling myself that there just isn't that many square feet....just for kicks I had them quote me an "installed price" (no intention of having them do it but wanted to know) that was $28 per sq ft in addition to the materials! Hehehehe nawwwwwww... they market it real big in the boating world sooooooooooooo $$$$$

We have carpet in our 91 350LE.
The only problem with the Classic motorhomes is they have no belly pan or insulation in the floor. The carpet pad and carpet are all you get.
Not an issue if you don't camp where it is cold, but fall and spring are nice times.
I just replaced the sheet vinyl in our trailer with vinyl plank. I like it so far.

JD
