Bedroom Digital Clock wires help?

Bedroom clock was not working...

Pulled it out, and tested it.

It works fine if the black wire is Earth, and the Red AND Blue wires are powered.

I am guessing that the red wire is the master power, keeps the time, and the blue is a switched live, and powers the display up.
Could it be the rocker switch mounted below the clock?

And whats with the yellow and orange wires joined together???
What do they do?

Anyone?

that looks just like the clock from a 1978 chrysler lebaron. maybe someone can find a diagram for that? i think the display has a high and low. the dim is for night time.

If it works on the bench and not on the wall I would look at the wires on the wall.

Your assumption that one wire is power at all times and one is switched power for the display is most likely right.

Test the red and blue wires to ground. One of them should be battery and one should be switched. If there is no power on either I would look for a fuse. Since nether wire would be high current that fuse may be directly behind the clock as a small inline fuse rather that back at the panel. However if other lights are also not working then the lock is on a fuse in the panel.

If the yellow and orange wires were connected before you removed it I would leave them along as they may have had some other function in another application of that clock.

Good call Howie, and thanks for the input...
I missed an important part of the story...
The wires were disconnected behind it, thats why I assumed it was faulty!
Someone had been in there messing... Its a mess...
Anyone got a pic of how that area should look?
Mine has a mounting bracket for something... and a hole drilled.

Rich... you are spot on and great call.... It looks exactly like the clock in that era Lebaron...
Look at this pic I found on Ebay... its a 1982, but the same!
The "Chronometer" logo is above the display, rather than below tho.

Zoomed...

Now doing a search for the wiring schematic for it!

I would expect that you'll find that the two extra wires control the dimming function. In a typical automotive application, one would go to the instrument lights, and the other would go to the running light circuit. Presence of power on the running light circuit would cause the voltage on the instrument light circuit to control the display brightness.

Thanks Jammer!
I was there today, and tried to get a pic of what I have behind there...
Couldn't get my head in to see!
I know that I only had to snip 2 wires, and I am pretty sure that teh black, Earth was not connected.
Pray tell me why you would use all the same color wires....
Here it is...

I am gonna assume that the switch controls if the clock is visible or not. I will do some more testing!

Same color? That's easy, so you only have to buy one roll.

I've done that.

But when I do I put those little number markers on each one.

Here are the wire connections. I will try to scan and post the page tomorrow.
Orange & Yellow= not used
Black = Ground
Red = 12 volts positive
Blue= Connected to 12v+ through switch (Provides a way to turn off display to conserve power)
The Purple wires in the rear compartment are all 12v+. They supply power to the clock and rear reading lights. All on the same 12v circuit.
Hope this helps, Rob

Perfect Rob!

That is just one of the pages in the "H" section in mine. We lucked out and got almost all of the documentation with our 345.

My manual has all things electrical in section "H". The ice maker info is at the end of section "I", Appliances.
My manual is a re-copy of the one with a copyright date of 1986, and warranty info to 1987.
The sections listed in the table of contents are as follows:
Warranty and service (13 pgs)
Driving (14 pgs)
Chassis (53 pgs)
Camping (10 pgs)
Exterior (6 pgs)
Interior furnishings & accessories (6 pgs)
Plumbing (58 pgs)
Electrical (50 pgs)
Appliances (88 pgs)
Specifications (2 pgs)
I could get the manual scanned to a CD at Pip or Kinkos fairly cheaply.

My manual is 305 pages. Pip wants $40-50 bucks to scan, and then burn a CD. Sounds a little salty to me. You may be able to get one from Airstream for less. Let me know what you want to do.
