Try this method as the power steering and brakes are a conjoined system.

Check flexible hoses for internal leaks if old and not replaced.

While it may not be the problem it maybe good for you to get aquainted with the hydroboost system and how it interacts and affects the brakes.

Tony's links should give you what you need. Further instructions can be found in the service and unit repair manuals

Serial/Vin Tag location? Help

So we finally got good pressure on the pedal and made the voyage to DMV for the visual vehicle identification part of the interstate title transfer from Nevada to California.

I showed them the vin tag in the engine compartment above the radiator, then he asked me for the location of the safety compliance tag. He described it as containing the vin and stating this vehicle is in compliance with all federal safety standards blah blah blah.

I looked high and low tore back carpets opened all drawers inside and out without any luck!

Can someone tell me where the heck this tag is located?

Federal Safety Standards? For a 30+ year old Airstream? The late 70's, early 80's?

I'd be shocked if such a thing existed. I'd be telling the inspector the same thing.

Airstream didn't even keep records, let alone meet any sort of Federal standards, if the Federal standards even existed at all for RV's.

Cheers

I believe he tag is located in the inspector's head. I've never seen one, heard of one, or wanted one. I guess that's another reason I'll never live in California.

Is the vin number on any other location/tag on these coaches aside from engine compartment? I guess I'm looking for something like this.

Believe it or not I did find a RVIA tag. It's a yellowed plastic oval shaped tag riveted onto the skin just above the step to the right of the main door. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow.

My bad, I'm shocked I found it.

Cheers

Yes. I have a RIVA tag in the same location and the axle loading sticker on the headliner above the drivers seat. Neither have the Vin number on them.

Debbie says I should issue tags certified by Bob....Good enough doesn"t satisfy me...Although indexing screws is one of my OCD issues or concerns items like fire suppression systems, correct brakes, wiring ,tires etc. are just absolutely necessary for a trouble free and enjoyable trip. Regards, Bob

I looked at previous photo's of your coach and though difficult to see I couldn't see a tag beside the doorway. If that is the case and a tag is nowhere to be found on your coach I would get a hold of the RVIA or your local RV dealer to start the jumping through hoops process of certification.

Hopefully you find the tag.

Cheers

It sounds like the DMV guy is looking for a tag like the one you posted at #47. DOT regs require them for vehicles being imported, see #2 at https://icsw.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/im...ite/index.html
That site also gives some unhelpful clues as to where the tag should be. No idea why he wants to see it for your rig unless maybe he thinks it's homemade.

Many years ago I did a bus conversion in Calif. After spending a good part of an afternoon at the DMV trying to get an explanation of "inhabitable" so I could register the bus as an rv, I finally ask "What does your inspector check off on his list to determine what is inhabitable?" Their response, "We don't have an inspector, you just state that it is inhabitable on a form." I drove to the next nearest DMV and filled out the form and got it registered. I suggest you find another DMV office and try again. If they want another tag, show them the Airstream tag above the other side of the radiator.

So just an update from my end. I sent a request for information to Gorving, which is the consumer side of RVIA, asking them for more information on the RVIA tags.

I asked 1) Where were the tags first issued to RV's and if an RV is missing its tag what steps would have to take place on replacing or certifying, (if the RV was never issued one).

Haven't heard back yet.

BTW Dan, your 82, Mexcella is 81, both 280's, does yours have a tag, and if so, where?

Cheers

Have you looked on E-bay? I seem to recall seeing those tags on E-bay a while back.

Electra has that tag in the same location, but it's not the one the DMV guy was looking for. I called Airstream customer service and apparently this is a common request. I emailed the Airstream rep my vin and contact information and Airstream will mail me a verification letter to shove in the DMV guys face. Doesn't look like I'm going to make the April 7th trip but I'm close.

Hey Tony my RVIA tag is behind the right front wheel well just ahead of the panel seam at the rear of the cockpit. Just aft of the seam is a decal from Florida where the coach was originally purchased.
