4L80E oil/gasket change

Hi,

I'd like to change the oil in my tranny this year, I've not serviced it before, so probably due. Should I change the gasket while I am at it? Is there anything else I should while I am doing this e.g. with the tranny cooler? I am unclear how this system works.....

Nick,

I don't know if you have to change the gasket but while the pan is off I would just as a preventative measure. Also while you're in there you should replace the filter.

The 4L80E has a reusable gasket....When the pan is down check for foreign material in the pan around the flat metal magnet attached to the bottom side of the pan...providing that it is still there. I strongly recommend a 23-24 qt. flush with the proper machine and replacing the fluid with a full synthetic ....costly ??? Yes....but not as much as replacing the transmission. Regards, Bob

After I have read into the technology of my 250s, the oil change in the transmission was one of my first work.
The transmission quickly becomes very warm. And too warm, destroys the oil and then the transmission.

I did the following work.
First I got a new filter with seal. If you buy the filter, the seal is included.
Additionally a new oil pan. Furthermore, a sensor for the oil temperature.
First, a hole was built into the new oil pan and the sensor was mounted.
Next, remove the oil pan with oil. Caution, the oil level is higher than the gasket. A nice mess. Beautiful "Brown" soup. Although the previous owner said it is all new, it was time to change.

Then change the filter, is easy. Then mount the oil pan with a new gasket. For the seal I have also used a little oilresitant silicone to abudic it.

It is also important to determine the exact amount of the oil you need. There are about 11 liters in the Transmission-system. But in the oil pan only about 4 liters. You must refill the same amount.
I changed the oil three times after the first Change. To change as much as possible old oil. Between the change I have driven a little each time. Only then was the color acceptable "red". With the sensor I need now no longer unscrew the oil pan, only the sensor.

I will change the oil again this year. Then only three times without filter, at last with filter.
The price of the oil. Not the price for the gearbox.

Another thing, the amount of oil when draining is different depending on how long the vehicle is stationary. I think the oil from the cooler and system runs very slowly into the oil pan.

And now with the temperature sensor I drive safer and see what happens in the transmission. It gets very hot, especially on long slopes and also in the stop and go in the city. With my driving style I adjust the temperature. The problem is that even with an extra large oil cooler takes a long time until the temperature goes back. In addition, I often drive with 1500kg trailer, so it is particularly important to observe the temperature.
