I scored a brand new “0” hours Onan 4500 commercial generator from one of my Verizon buddies. It is a propane unit but utilizes the same parts as a 6500. It seems like a waste to strip it just for the exhaust manifold that I need. If anyone is interested I might consider selling it and just buying the exhaust manifold from the supplier, Regards, BobClick image for larger version

I installed the replacement P-51 auxiliary cooling fan last night. It spins faster right out of the box.....I thought it spun slow when I originally installed it last winter, but I had nothing to compare it to.......made in China. The generator is all ready to be removed on Saturday. We’re going to install the front Centramatics on Saturday and install the new Alcoa rims on the 325LE as well. I’m also going to install the new battery disconnect replacement master switch and solenoids this week. Regards, Bob

My first outing in a SOB......definitely not the same....,the company was awesome, the place was packed, Roger’s Rock, north Lake George. Wish I had had my 370LE there. Regards, Bob

On another note we removed the Onan 6500 from the 370LE, the manifold (exhaust) May be repairable, front Centramatics installed, they “STILL” haven’t finished the fabrication on the ones for the drive axle, and tag axle.....hope they’re done this month. We took all the tires off the 370LE and 325LE as well on Saturday to get the tire/rim work done. I’m going to take the 34’ Classic S/O to Cooperstown Labor Day weekend, so I have to do the PM work on that as well. Regards, BobClick image for larger version

That should TIG weld just fine. I’d reinforce it with some patches. Putting in an isolation coupler is a good plan.

I will have the manifold for the generator back on Tuesday, I replaced the 20 amp circuit breaker with a 30.....I will let you guys know how that works out. If my math is correct, I’ll just be at 24.7 amps which will still be under the max output of the 6500 generator. The front Centramatics are on and I’ll have the two sets for the drive axle and tag axle on Tuesday. I plan on taking it for a ride the following weekend to see how they work. Regards, Bob

So on my Onan 6500 there are two twenty amp circuits just like you have. One is a dedicated circuit to the rear ac with nothing else on it. The other 20 amp circuit carries everything else that's 110/120 including the front ac. Is that the same way yours is/was wired? So are you replacing the "everything else" breaker with the 30amp? How many amps does yours converter draw? I can run both ac while on the generator but the voltage gets a bit too low for me to use it that way. It will dip down to 109v or so when the second compressor starts. But changing the breaker to a 30 won't increase the voltage...correct?
So just what the hell are you trying to accomplish here Bobalou ?

I have never seen an Onan 6500 with 2 (20) amp circuit breakers. 40 x 120 only equals 4800. All 6500’s that I have seen have a 30 in the upper position and a 20 in the lower. Thus 50 which equals 6000. You say your voltage drops low to 109 ish ???? I know you replaced your points and condenser so adjusting your governor should be easy for you. You may also want to clean up/replace the brushes at the same time. So......my upper 30 services the front AC, hot water, electric floor heat, microwave, the lower 20 services the rear AC, and power max 100 amp converter. The 20 amp generator circuit breaker trips when I am using both the AC and the converter at the same time. Total amp draw that I need is 24.7 The front circuit is never pulling 30 amps so putting an additional 30 amp breaker in the original 20 slot might work. The generator will never put out 60 amps cause that equals 7200 watts.......LOL, now I’m confused......Regards, Bob

Battery Isolator

bob,
Peter Hausman suggested I contact you to get some idea where the "infamous" battery isolator is located on my 350LE.
http://www.airforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186932
Elsewhere in the Forum, there is a thread that describes the catastrophic damage done when my battery box extended underway and was removed by hitting the roadside safety rail. I'm sort of 80% finished in rebuilding the box and associated wiring but cannot find the connection between the engine alternator isolator block and the batteries.
The symptom right now is although the alternator has been checked and is producing volts and amps, the dash voltmeter is dead. This seems to be due to the fact that when the battery box was ripped away, I also lost the connection between the engine isolator block and the batteries themselves. Nick (Boom Sounds) says, "Hi - I think my feed to the engine isolator was via a four block heavy duty thermal breaker mounted on the frame rail just behind the battery tray..."
Peter suggests this may be the missing link as in
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sure-Power-...5.c10#viTabs_0

Could this be the cause of the lost connection between the alternator and the isolator to the batteries themselves?

Final question, the 350LE was fitted with the optional icemaker to ensure a steady supply of ice for onboard martinis in 1992. I removed this device however, I've not been able to trace the copper water feed connection to where it comes off the main water supply? The 1/4" copper pipe disappears into the floor and does not reappear anywhere I can locate. any thoughts or Do you know of any member who has been able to solve this mystery?
Always appreciative
chris

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm....upon further review of the breakers on my 6500,
Please ignore my previous post......I indeed have a 20a and 30a breaker....so, never mind...talk amongst yourselves...I'll sit in the corner till someone comes to get me

Cheers from beautiful British Columbia.

The (2) rear sets of Centramatics finally arrived, the tag axle set was still to small to fit over the shoulder of the wheel studs so I opened the 6 holes up 1/16” each with a Unibit.......Perfect ! They are all primed and painted. The 7 rear tires/wheels, including the spare are all broken down, we’ll vacuum the balance beads out before we install the Centramatics. I will try and do a 80 MPH road test on I 88 Saturday night before it gets dark. I also found a problem with the original taillight wiring from the factory that I believe all the Classics have resulting in dim lights and have fabricated a fix, will get into that later with pictures for everyone. Regards, Bob

Alright.....so what didn’t I get done this weekend ??? NOTHING ! We killed it, Centramatics all on....good to go, 100 mile road test 85 MPH on I 88, 20 miles east at 85 MPH, 20 miles west at 85 MPH @3500 RPM. No shake at all, very smooth, we pushed the engine cause it’s coming out anyway after Columbus Day weekend. I just finished installing the new battery solenoids and interior switch, that’s all done ! Generator is reinstalled with the repaired exhaust manifold and repaired exhaust bracket along with the second 30 amp circuit breaker in place if the original 20. We also moved about 100 yards of dirt over the bank of the upper lot, I need to move another 200, my goal is to have enough room to park 5 classics so I can someday host my own “Get-Together” We are starting to make our plans for the Canadian Banff Park/ Yellowstone 3 week trip next summer. That will be my longest trip ever. I hope to finish the engine rebuild, new dashboard, kitchen, and 2 speed rear end for that trip, Regards, Bob

Bob,
Were you satisfied with your centermatics you installed. Fixing to have new Hankook 8R/19.5 tires put on my aluminum wheels once they are all polished and was wondering which would be best weights, beads or the centermatics for the 310. Thanks Jim

The beads are good for speeds up to 65, but if you hit a pot hole or bridge joint they lose their position and you might experience a death wobble. Our trip out west should show speeds of 75 to 85 so that is why I chose the Centramatics, I had the beads before. You might want to consider the Michelin 225/70R19.5....they are in the 370LE, and I plan on putting them on the 325LE as well.
