I am finishing up the air reel install tonight....will post some pictures, still trying to locate brackets for the Detroit dieselís AC compressor, power steering pump and alternator, engine mounts and the rest of the hardware I will need for the diesel conversion. Now that I have a firm hold on my never ending lawn growth situation, Iím going to focus on fine tuning the dash AC, repair the speedometer, and try to figure out which rear end I have in the 370LE so that I can do a ring and pinion swap for more speed. I have been in touch with Pennwood....tentative dates for the fall ďGet-Together are either 09/12/18-09/17/18 or 09/19/18-09/24/18. Regards, Bob

The later dates would work best for us but we could make either work.

The air hose reel compartment is 95% done, just a little paint touch up work from taking the reel in and out 23 times before I got it right, 1/4Ē clearance top and bottom. Regards, BobClick image for larger version

Nicely done! Even a bit of space for a few air hose accessories, like a tire inflater, etc. Maybe a small metal tray with a bit of rubber lining to dampen rattles....?

I found the tag on my rear end this morning (the 370LEís.....donít even go there !) it turns out itís a Dana/Spicer about 1/2 the size of the one thatís in my tool truck. Before I head out to Pennwood in August Iím going to do a ring and pinion swap....the book says I have a 5.63:1 in it now and Iím going to throw a set of 4.56 :1 in it...,,if my calculations are correct Iíll get 70 MPH with that set up at 3200 RPM verses the 56 that Iím getting now with the 5.63:1 I donít care if I smoke the tranny cause itís coming out anyway in October. I am also in the process of checking out a 2 speed rear end to mate up with the diesel.....beets the heck out of a gear vendors. Regards, Bob

Yup, just gave the Airstream Gods some serious ammo. Hope you have Good Sam or RV AAA.

Cheers

I drove a dump truck with an Eaton 2 speed years ago. There were a lot of reasons it was a pain in the rear. On a truck with 4 speed and undersized engine that nearly doubled its weight between empty and full it did its job. The newer truck had a bigger engine and a 5 speed. Much nicer to drive. If you were just going to use it as an overdrive in high and a granny for pulling Tony out of the ditch it might be an acceptable option. Iíd really just try to find the differential gearing and an over the road tranny for a similar weight vehicle with that Detroit.

Don't even joke about stuff like that.......what was his big mistake? He hit the brakes....transfered more weight to the blown wheel, causing it to dig in.

Based on how fast he was passing the other vehicle I'd have to say excessive speed probably had something to do with it as well.

Old video, saw it a couple of years ago....but it shows how fast the do do can hit the fan....my thoughts on the 2 speed rear is in addition to the pinion swap.....I would use low range in the campgrounds and to pull Tony out and use high range on the road....this would give me the best bang for the buck ! And it is a simple job to do ! Iíve got info coming from Dana/Spicer this week as I want to keep my original axle housing to see if the upgrade is possible....will let you all know, Regards, Bob
