Took a stab at the elusive side lights that are no longer available! Worst problem is trying to get them out! AS made sure they were glued in good![emoji2955]
Also at some time in their life, the rust had shorted out an the wires were cut at the switch to take care of the problem!
I used the old fixture to trace the pattern for the aluminum plate.
Used the stainless LEDs from super bright LEDs. Warm white.
Now to get the rest of the old clear coat off that is left!Click image for larger version

Thanks Peter.

Got any ideas on what to do then???

You have seen how bad it has come off so far. Some of it has been off quite a while and the aluminum has tarnished, so its a blotchy mess!

yup, you are right on all fronts. I try to keep the original clear coat on where its mainly intact, which is typically below the belt line. And yes, the aluminum will tarnish where the clearcoat is gone. Tarnishing is not a big issue, pitting of the aluminum is. Tarnished aluminum can always be polished out.
Its the huge giant commitment of stripping all the clear coat (the easy part) and then comes the "oh Boy", the endless hours of polishing AND the endless hours of keeping it looking that way. Around here it takes about 18 month for it to need a complete redo. Granted its less work (Nuvite grade c only) to polish it back up. With other words , it becomes a life style.
I have tried a protective coating after polishing, called Sharkhide with questionable results. It did protect the aluminum from oxidizing but the wipe on method resulted in an uneven finish.

Great work, an inspiration and if I can find time, I will nick lots of your ideas. I have a question about the Airstream external signs you made up. What approach did you take? I am thinking of upgrading mine which just say Airstream....no classic....no 250........strange how the factory did everything differently.

Thanks

These are the factory signage that came on the coach, and yes AS made many changes throughout the years with many different fonts as well.

Love seeing y'all over in the UK keeping these rigs on the road.

Your welcome Dave.
Be very patient with the old set screws. You don't want to break the allen wrench part of the set screw. Won't be fun drilling and taping them out of the housing if you do!

Hey Chris:

I need some advice on modifications, etc., necessary for pulling a vehicle. Did you do that to your 350, or was that already done?

Hey Dave. I use a BlueOx knock off (I made it myself) and have great success with the unit. We have pulled our Saturn wagon and earlier my wife's SL2 as well behind the 310.
We like the little Saturn's because they are so light, but you have to be mindful that they are there!
We may soon be pulling a 2001 Chevy Tracker 4X4, but will have to have a braking system for it because it's a heaver vehicle!

There is may units for flat towing out there, and many cars you can flat tow as well. Some with pumps and some you don't have to, like the little Saturn's.

You will need to inspect your hitch on the coach. AS has been known for not having a very robust hitch on their units!

Was great having them back in Tennessee on their way to Florida. Maybe next trip down we will tackle the rear brake replacement?

Chris and Brenda are the best! Can't thank Chris enough for sharing his knowledge, skill and hard work. Besides brakes he also adjusted (fixed) the throttle and cruise control cables and removed a couple of really stubborn kickdowns I didn't need anymore. What a great weekend and Brenda made some of the best soup I've ever had ( 2 kinds of course!). I learned from a master!
