1987 345 Speedometer cable removal?

Hey folks, I'm trying to get my original speedo serviced or rebuilt as it has stopped functioning. I've checked out all of the cables and they're turning fine. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to get the cable disconnected from the back of my speedo. I've attempted everything I can imagine with the retaining clip that is there to the point of it breaking and being removed but still the cable is holding on tight. Any suggestions on how to get it off so I can send the unit in for servicing? Thanks, Kenneth

Hi Kenneth,

I was a General Motors mechanic in the era of speedometers with cables.

If memory serves me, you need to push in on the tang of the retaining clip and pull the cable housing back at the same time. You may need to wiggle the cable housing as it could be stuck.

I used to do it "by feel" because you couldn't see what you were doing.

Good luck with your project!

-Jeff

LOL....Another Airstream ďCob JobĒ waiting to be discovered. Since Airstream decided to use Telaflex (Chrysler) gauges on their motor homes they had to grind down the back of the gauge to make the GM cable fit. Rather than utilizing a nice new cable Iím sure it was just another cost cutting decision Airstream made to COB something together. Regards, Bob

Ok, thanks Bob and Jeff. It sounds like it is just "stuck". I'll make sure the clip is completely removed then just keep working at it. maybe a little wd-40 as well. Thanks again

Ok I got it off and much to my dismay the gauge itself is locked up. Anybody know where I might find a replacement? I've searched through the threads and it looks like they're all gone.....
