Help!!
I was able to limp off exit. My 87 Moho with 454 was driving fine. Cruising along at 65 and and was like it just went into neutral. Low gears work fine. I stopped put in park then back in drive only sifted to 2nd gear I think. Checked fluid level and Is right on. Is trans shot? Ideas?

Last time I had that feeling was when one of the disk brakes was not releasing. Stopped let it cool and worked fine, when I got home replaced the brake calipers and brakes. With Ir thermometer easy to diagnose just shoot the wheel, if it is hot like over 200 you have a dragging brake.

Myrtle,

That is a serious bummer, guess I should have picked you up in the jet after all. But rented Ferraris can't be trusted either.

Really though, the bitch of it is that you have done so much, so right, and the thing still bites you in the ass. Sorry to hear. But I suppose these torrid love affairs are never without drama. Keep motoring!!

Charly.

Myrtle,
Keep us posted on your diagnoses of the Classic. Almost sounds as if tranny just burped and quit on you. Strange. Does tranny fluid have any odd smells to it?
Thanks, Derek

Not much in the way of progress this week on my Airstream, beyond the arrival of some LED bulbs..

With my Parents visiting, I have been spending time with them, and when they have been entertaining themselves I have been fixing the GF's Range Rover.
It was not starting when hot.. an investigation revealed no fuel pressure, but as soon as it cooled, pressure came back, and it ran fine.
Turned out to be a bad fuel pump.. as far as I see now.
Its an "In Tank Pump", but part of the whole assembly, with pump/Sender/return.
The word is that the Land Rover part is $800...
Drained and dropped the tank... pig of a job!
I found a TRE pump that was identical, and $85..
Some careful disasembly, and we have fuel pressure, and its running fine!
An Autopsy on the old pump shows one of the 2 brushes was not connected to the armature..
The word is that 100k miles is about right, and we have 125k on her.
For all you anti British Electrical Naysayers... the Original pump has a large "Made in Mexico" stamp on it!

Now I have the front suspension out to find where and why the Drivers side Suspension Airbag is leaking down overnight...
This can only be good training for the Airstream... Right???

Call my crazy! Still love her. They shouldn't bite the hands that feed her. She is old and doesn't know any better. It was a safe place to break down had my jeep. All will be fine. :-)

First thing I noticed heading to FL was it wasn't doing it. I bet with the pressure of pulling the jeep made it not hum. I changed out differential fluid twice thinking it was that. I then felt it was the trans. must have been.

Sorry. Another question. Y'all recommend anything as far as transmission ? Overdrive? I know there has been many talks about it. Didn't have time to go back and research. Thanks again!

Choctawmel has fitted a 4L80-E, but had some issues... maybe he has on opinion based on experience...
Here is his thread...
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f159...one-75774.html

The 4L85-E is the HD version of it, and rated up to 16,500lb.
GM 4L80-E transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Its 4 speed electronicly controlled transmission, so that brings its own issues... There are many stand alone controllers you can get.

The ultimate Trans would be the Allison 1000, that is a Electronicly controlled 5 or 6 speed...

Start a thread over in the Engine and transmission section, and get some feedback?
My gut feeling would be to get your transmission diagnosed by a trustworthy shop, It might be the Modulator or something simple...
If not, have it rebuilt with a Allison TC, and later, add a OD unit on the back...
My 0.02!

He is very trust worthy. That was the reason I spent $950 to tow it there. He already said it sounds like a modulator. Thanks for input. I will go through the threads. Thank you! Thank you!!

Yeah! I have good Sam platinum. I had to pay $950 to tow it still. I was 245 miles from home. I have to say it was crap the way it was handled. I called they said they would tow to closest place to fix. I understand. Then they found a place.... The one I had tow for me. Then GS said they now have to find someone to tow... They couldn't find anyone because of Sunday. The one that ended up towing was not on their plan for towing but was for repair. . I would have had to wait till Monday for them to tow it 6 miles. In that case I decided to have it towed on my own, to my local place. I can keep an eye on it and I know he's honest. So I had it towed. However the guy from GS called me back and told me to submit a letter for reimbursement. Told me to put in letter that he technically couldn't find a towing service and he would back me up. So.... Needles to say I will submit the letter and I will sign up another year with GS. It is up at the end of the month. :-) AAA towed my friends 280 I was with ,up to 100 miles no questions asked. I will stick with GS for the reason of that nice guy to take the time to call me back. That to me is good service.
