Looking at an Argosy 28'

I know this is a typical "newby" question, but I can't deny that I am just that. I am looking at an Argosy 28 motor home that is for sale. The current owner inherited it and knows little about it. The fridge is missing and the rest is there but condition unknown. He is willing to test the systems before I drive up for a look. He's asking $3K which seems reasonable, but understandable given the current fuel prices and economy.

I'm looking for something I can drive over to my other farm when I'm working there for a few days and save the 60 mile commute. What should I be looking for and is this a good idea, insane, or just plain stupid?

Thanks
Steve

What year?
Hook it up to power, check AC.
Hook up to water and check for leaks.
Tires?

If it runs and drives reasonably well and doesn't have many leaks, broken windows, etc. it sounds like an interesting price.

The missing refrigerator would be an issue to think about for long-distance travel, but for what you describe there are cheap options like 120v-only dorm or bar fridges that would keep your beer cold.

The front windshields on those are supposed to be quite expensive. The drive mechanicals are heavy truck chassis bits, so they're most available.

I think it is a '78. The owner has agreed to hook up shore power and city water to check these items and report back. I'd like a 3 way fridge but a cooler full of ice works for me. I am handy but have little free time and no extra energy. A late model camper would probably make more sense, but I don't swing that way.

Have a nice day

Seller says he thinks it is sold.

I think a tow behind makes more sense for me, unless the right motor home shows up locally at the right price. Anyone have an Airstream, Argosy or (gasp) GMC MH or camper near KY they need to get rid of? No wood frame boxes for me!

Have a nice day
