You didn't specify house or start battery. but house should be deep cycle and start longest warranty you can afford. I used autozones gold and they replaced no questions when it was less than a year, MH was sitting without being plugged in so it was sort of my fault too.

Are you looking to upgrade? If your old ones were sufficient and are bad due to age why not re-new with the same. Just my 2 cents.

You have some options:
1. larger size battery, or a 2nd battery
2. AGM (no maintainance)
3. 2 6v batteries in series to give you 12
If you do a search you will find more info than you want to know.

Thanks, I need them both. I found the deep cell battery (the small one fits in the compartment) I need the correct start battery size.

I know this thread is ancient, but it seems to be the only thread here that even mentions the starting battery. I can't seem to find any information regarding what size battery to replace the old (completely dry and very, very dead) one. There are lots of discussions about house batteries, but I'm looking for recommendations on the starting battery. My usual pick would be "the biggest one that fits," but I'm new to motorhomes, so just want to make sure there isn't something I don't know about to consider. The only "side post" battery at Costco is a group 24, which is likely *fine* but seems a little whimpy.
This is a 1975 24 foot Argosy with the Chevy 454. Mine has the starter and house batteries both in the front compartment. Obviously I will eventually be changing the house battery set up to relocate for more space and more batteries, but right now I just need a new starting battery to get it running and moved to my place.
Thanks, all. You guys rock!

If your batteries are located above the radiator then I think group 24 would be the way to go. Personally I like Optima batteries but they are pricey. In your situation I'd buy a decent group 24 battery and go with it. Next time you need a battery you can take your time to pick and choose.

Thanks for your response, Brad. I went to a different Costco, and they had a group 27 with side posts, so I bought that one (a little more CCA at 800). For $90, I think it's a "fine" "for now." I'm sure there are better batteries, but it's the right size and configuration and is doing the trick (she's alive!!!!).
Thanks again.

The Group 27 was a good choice for the 454, very nice. You could have gone with an AGM Start battery like the Silver Streak and it also is 800 CCA. A 80Ahr rated and slightly more appropriate for dual use in a motor home but at twice the price I would have gone with the $90 wet cell as you did. If you treat it right it will go the long haul.

Glad you found that "side post" battery to fit. Also "well done" to have resurrected this old thread . . . in future years threads with this kind of continuity are very useful for research IMO.
Happy trails,

Its certainly nice to see kidjedi using the search function and researching, rather than assuming their problem is unique/wanting instant gratification like many "newbies"........
