1977 Argosy lost keys, which steering column did it use?

So I bought a 1977 Argosy and lost the keys. Does anyone know which column/ignition cylinder setup it used so I can figure out how to pull the cylinder and replace it which a new one? I thought it might be a chevy based since it was on their platform but I'm new.

I can't use the normal put it into acc and then pop it out method either.

It's a standard 1977 Chevy P-30 chassis so this one should work http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....058891&jsn=541

Windscreens are $750-800 new (Airstream or direct from Coach Glass)....but allow another $250 shipping and around $500 to fit.

The ACDelco D1499A cylinder should be the correct one. I used this one in my 74 Argosy and a 1984 310.

It is definitely Chevy based. Removal is using a small pin and I believe turning to the ACC position. Of course that's based on memory which isn't the greatest anymore!

Thank you for the replies. I noticed on the airstream parts site they only seem to have the drivers side. It also says it depends on the model. Is there a break down of which ones would fit which vehicles somewhere? I'm guessing all the 28ft argosy units are the same but maybe not.

All of the Argosy motorhomes and all of the Classic motorhomes into the early 90s (?) use the same windshields and gaskets.

There is one subtle difference, and that's the color of the tint across the top. New replacements come with a grey tint unless specified otherwise, but there are blue and turquoise variants. If you are ordering make sure you stipulate which you need.

So I'm full of questions and I appreciate all the feedback. I think I'm going to have to buy 4 new rear tires and they don't all match. What size do I need? I know the wheels are 19.5"

Looks like 225 70 19.5 is a close equivalent to the 8r19.5 I have.

The smaller Argosy originally had 16.5" wheels (and most folks change to 16") and there are not many folks with larger Argosy (and so 19.5" wheels) active on the forum to give advice.

But the majority of the classic motorhome had the same wheels so I suggest searching in that forum for suggestions on tyre size..

Looks like it is supposed to have 8R 19.5 tires but they are hard to come by. 225 75 r19.5 tires are easier to find but the sidewalls will rub on the rear without a small spacer or different wheels. because they are slightly wider.

Just a little update, got my ignition switched out, new keys, and etc. Only coast me about 30 dollars in parts. I also installed 225 70 r19.5 tires in the rear. They look so much better than the old narrow tires. Will install front ones eventually. They are old but look brand new still with the nipples and no signs of dry rot.

Also flushed out the radiator, fixed a leak, rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the filters, and added an electric fuel pump and a new small tank until I clean out the main tank. Found out my starter is not shimmed correctly and ordered a shim kit. Hopefully I'll have her running tonight or tomorrow.

Other than short low speed trips I wouldn't drive on old tires. By old I mean 7 maybe 8 years or more. I've experienced 1st hand a blow out in a motorhome on old tires and it wasn't pleasant. Check the date codes on the tires to give you an idea of just how old the tires are.

Well I am only going to use the tires to get the RV home. It is only going to go about 10 miles then it's going inside for probably 4-5 months for a restore/upgrade. It'll have new tires before it goes on a trip.

Yeah you should be good to go

Maybe I worry to much but having been through a blow out that damaged the floor I don't care to go through that again. A blow out on the front is something I definitely wouldn't want to experience.

When I finally drive mine for the first time it will be about an 8 mile trip to get the exhaust installed and new tires. The tires I will be using for that trip are at least 10 years old. Needless to say I won't be breaking any land speed records on that trip

Oh I'm borderline crazy when it comes to rubber on vehicles. I checked all the dates on the tires where I bought mine and got used tires for the back that were 2 years old and looked new. High end Michelin highway tires(I inspected them inside and out and show no signs of dry rot or cracking even when flexed). The unit has all new radiator hoses, belts, and fuel lines before I'm evening driving those 10 miles and I have a giant abc fire extinguisher and fuel cutoff ready(efuel). I'm going to try to go reinstall the starter today with shims and see if she will crank up.

I've never bought used tires before but I didn't want to buy a full set of new tires on a vehicle that is going to be down for a while. I upgraded to the 225 70 19.5 tires and they look soo much better. An engine swap is in this things future so I'm not sure how long it will be down. Looking at the 8.1 or Duramax. Not a big chevy guy but the 8.1 will bolt right up with that lovely 6 speed and the Duramax will give me the best MPGs and they are cheaper from yards.

Something to keep in mind if you do an engine swap is the orientation of the radiator. Your Argosy has the vertical radiator which means you might have to look into also swapping in a horizontal radiator. From what I recall when I compared my 74 Argosy frame with that of an 86 345 installing a horizontal radiator was probably doable but mounting brackets would have needed to be fabricated.
