Meet The Hamilton Express!

Hello all!
I purchased a '71 Overlander and plan to renovate the interior this winter/spring. I'll post updates as I go along and will have lots of questions as I am a newbie at this. I'm going to gut most of the interior in January and check the subfloor and frame to see what kind of shape they are in. I plan on going for a modern interior look. I welcome suggestions, comments, laughs and accolades.

I'm shooting for June to be able to take my first trip...I know I won't be done with all of it but we will see how far I can get. I'm in Akron, OH in case anyone wants to stop by and say hello. If anyone is interested in some of the original interior parts, let me know. I'm looking to replace most of them.

Why Hamilton Express? My 3 yr old French Bulldog is named Hamilton and he is excited to meet you all at a rally.

Looking forward to lots of work and fun.
Adam

Hi Adam. Nice looking trailer. Welcome to the forums. You have a lot more ambition than I have. I'll be one of those watching from the sidelines, admiring your work.

Hey Adam!
Welcome to the forum! I too just bought a 1971 Overlander a few months ago and I'm in the process of restoration. We're keeping ours mostly original. I was wondering, are you planning on keeping the Dometic Refrigerator? Ours has a warped door that won't close, so I'd be interested in purchasing yours off of you if it still works and is in good condition. If not, I'd be interested in just the door. Good luck with your restoration. Im looking forward to following your progress!

Subscribe to follow your renovation. Are you gutting the interior? What are you plans at this point?

I've been working on my '72 for a little over a year now, it's a ton of fun! If you gut yours, don't be afraid to take it out and enjoy it! Consider it a really large tent, and use whatever old camping gear you have laying around. Actually living in it for short periods really helped my design, and pushed me to do some radical things to my interior that I otherwise wouldn't have thought of.

Though be warned to be sure to stock a lot of beverages. These "design meetings" can be a thirsty business!

I would be interested in your oven and cooktop if they're pretty clean. My cooktop is decent but the oven I bought on eBay just arrived today...damaged. UGH

I would be interested is some tambour also if daved20319 doesn't take it. I found a place in MN that sells a 4x8 sheet of tambour red oak veneer for $112 and $44 shipping so I may do that and stain to match.

VetekTinCan- I have a full size fridge I'm getting rid of. Condensation/ice swelled the insulation between the freezer and refrigerator so the door won't shut. I was told it would be cheaper to get a newer model. It's light blue inside

Hey Craig- Thanks so much! I just ordered a new gasket... hoping that will fix it. If not though, I'll keep yours in mind!

I'm jealous, you have an indoor space to work in over the winter? Depending on skills and time available, 6 months might be a bit ambitious, generally I figure on things taking 3x as long as my original estimates, but it doesn't have to be absolutely complete before it hits the road.

Check out my latest blog post and see which composting toilet I chose and my grandiose plans to move the bathroom and add a bedroom. Wish me luck!

Meet The Hamilton Express!

Now I've really really done it! Decided to gut the inside and start from scratch.

I did pretty much what you're doing to my Ambassador, adding a rear walk-around queen and a side bath with composting toilet. I went with Nature's Head, and like it. Except for the dumping of the pee bottle, that's pretty smelly and gross. Though the truth is, we haven't put the head to it's "ultimate" use, so I can't speak to that.

More pics. Removed all non-essential wiring, took out Blk water tank, checked freshwater tank for leaks and she is all good, removed antenna on roof, pulling out air conditioner to make way for a new one. Ordered new LED lighting, new layout w mid-bath coming together. Two months till the Hamilton Express needs to be road-worthy!

Nice project!

Wow! I am so impressed by you people-who-have-no-fear. We are in the process of cleaning up a salvaged 2009 25 ft FC and I won't let my husband take anything out, for fear of not lining things up propery. Some of us have amazing skills, some of us just have elbow grease. You have a very interesting project. Best wishes!
