I'm looking for verification of the model year of my Airstream 26' Overlander.
On page 85 of the soft cover book " Airstream " by Burkhart and Hunt, there is a picture of the sales catalog for the exact trailer I purchased this month.
Can you help with the identification?
Question # 20. I've enjoyed looking at pictures of other Airstreams from the 1950's on this site. Are there instructions on how to enter my Airstream pictures from my digital camera. I've never sent pictures over the internet.
Thanks, Walt

You need the VIN. Should be on a plate to the right of the entry door.

It's hard to tell from the Burkhart book, but I'd say a '56, '57 or a '58 Overlander. The serial number would be the onlly way to pinpoint exactly. There could be two different series of numbers depending on the plant of manufacture. CA used to include month and year it left the plant.

The plate to the right side of my airstream door has # 6591. I'm told someone out there has a vin # book. Would that someone help my by looking up 6591 and leave me the information on this site? Thanks.

According to RJ's archive website for the Overlander/Cruiser model years of '55, '56 and '57 the serial number started with a 6. The last three number positions were for the production number of this particular trailer. This means that you have the 591st Overlander made in those three years. This number is high enough to lead me to believe that its a '56 or '57. I'll just bet that Fred Coldwell can dig up more info on this.

Just my $.02 worth.

6591 is a '55 or '56 Overlander

Hi Walt:

Your 26' Overlander s/n 6591 was built in California in either 1955 or 1956. I saw "either" because our serial number source, the used trailer guides for those years, does not list the beginning and ending serial numbers for California built trailers during those model years. So, all we can do for now is to guess the year by approximation. I show s/n 6625 listed as a 1956 trailer, so your s/n 6591 is a 1956 or perhaps a 1955. Not knowing where the dividing line is between '55 and '56 makes it presently impossible to determine the actual year of your trailer. This is the best we can do for now.

Hello california57. Welcome to the forums!

RJ Dial's website for '57 Overlanders (upper left corner) gives an approximate range of ~6700 to ~6900 for VINs. If RJ is not sure I'd say that you are in the right range for identification.

The Mothership has recently improved VIN listings on their website. And here says numbers short of 7000 matches your identification of a '57 Overlander.

Nice to get affirmation, eh? Now if only the door-in-a-door folks would share the secret handshake with the rest of us.
