Not as much to show for today. The patches are fully cleco'd an waiting for my son tomorrow. I did receive Kip's (Aerowood) dent roller. Below is a couple of pics of the refrigerator cover I used for a first attempt. I think if I had a sand bag to roll against, I might be able to get a bit more out. This was just against the lawn. Next up will be the banana wrap with a big dent, then the crease in the trailer side.

Aviator, great looking work. Its a shame that work keeps getting in the way of the restoration project. I was curious as to the type of insulation that you are plaining to use when you start back together. Again your making great progress on the trailer, and if you want send any extra rain over to Texas, we need it.

My plan is to use a combination of ridged foam board with a reflective barrier facing the outside, and reflectix on the inside. Voids will be sealed with polyurethane minimally expanding foam. I read Zeppelinium's insulation test with great interest, but just can't stand working with the pink fiberglass. From his test, it looks like that is as effective as anything else, as well as more cost effective.

Making nice progress Craig. The dent roller from Kip is a very handy tool, for sure.

Not trying to start an insulation debate here
I have some Knauff EcoBatt in my shop. It is what Airstream is using these days. It isn't at all itchy like fiberglass, but has similar properties, both good and bad. I think a layer of Prodex or Reflectix and a layer of Knauff EcoBatt in the end caps would work very well.

Lance, since I am also at the insulation stage I'll ask first, Do you mess with the stand off strips for the prodex or just fit it to the skin then back it with the insulation mat? I know peodex recommends an air gap but does it really make much practical difference? I admit I worry a bit about the ability of the adhesives used to last 20 or 30 years.
thanks

Lance,

I like the idea of the Ecobatt especially for the end caps.

Well, my son (Bucky) was up early so we got started with the patch rivets about 1030. After running about 25 rivets my new gun broke (I think it is the valve as it continues to run slowly, and still responds to depression of the trigger). Needless to say this put a damper on the project. I called Aircraft Spruce to see if they rented tools (they don't), but fortunately one of the guys from our local chapter of the Commemorative Air Force happened to be there and relayed the message of come on over and we will see what we can do. They were kind enough to loan me a gun long enough to finish the patches. What a great bunch of folks. Earlier they used the big metal shear to cut my large patch panel to size.

A few of the rivets are over bucked, but not bad enough to drill out and redo. My son said old insulation was falling on him while he held the bar, so I vacuumed out the last of it this evening. I hit the interior with a pressure washer earlier in the week. Some of my temporary sealant tape was not adhering well because of left over pink stuff. Have I mentioned how much I dislike it?

One of the items I am rolling around in my brain is how to rewire it. I know I am going to move the batteries forward and go with a pair of Lifeline 6v in series which is what I converted our 1997 to and am very happy. My question is where to put the AC and DC breaker panels. Aft where it enters the trailer makes the most sense.

Managed to get a bit more work done today even if it isn't easily seen. A couple of days ago I tried to make a first pass with some Nuvite over areas which will soon have new running lights and radio antenna attached. My thinking is it will be easier to protect these items in the future when I do the full polish job. I found that I still had some clearcoat adhering to the aluminum. So, more stripper and rent the power washer again. I think I got it all this time. I would like to get all of the holes sealed up before I lift the body off that way when I put it back on, it will be water tight for my new floor.

With all of the rain we have had this Summer, I would rather not take any chances.

After seeking the collective wisdom of the forum, I have very carefully removed all of the badging on the trailer in order to make it easier to polish those sections. I still need to drill out the 30 rivets or so around each of the vents fore and aft in order to lift the body.

I had a chance to work on the damaged banana wrap this morning. Kip's wonder roller worked its magic!

Wow! Great job.

I do not possess the patience or tenacity that a restoration entails.

I firmly believe this restoration will be a lot of fun (at least that is what I have to keep telling myself)

These kind of things are always way more fun when you're done! Or at least I forget the bad times, frustration and expenses when it done and tell myself it wasn't that bad.

Well, I am finally getting closer to making this thing fly. My 15yr old son had a bunch of friends over this evening and I traded them Pizza for muscle work hoisting and moving the gantries into position.

I decided to give it one more check in the morning for any rivets, screws, or bolts I may have missed before lifting.

We have achieved separation and lift off! There were a few hidden bolts in the rear end, but the steel was so rotten that it pulled free.

Now the work starts on the floor and frame. I have a deadline as I start back to work full time on 01NOV13. Nose...grindstone....Falluminum with the other trailer....nose...grindstone.....
