1967 Sovereign Restore

I am the proud new owner of a '67 Sovereign and will be performing a "full monte" restore. I have setup a blog to document the process (see signature), but I am sure I will be in these forums asking questions many times during this project!

What is this gear/crank next to the front window? I recently removed the front rock guard frame, but there was nothing connected to this gear on the outside and the little piece between the window opening and the gear is plastic. The plastic piece made me wonder if this is an original crank/gear or something that a PO added along the way.

That was for the old time TV antenna.

The wire connections for the antenna are right next to it.

Welcome!
Is it a Stanley Sprocket or a Cogsworth Cog? It would be a weird place for it, but might it be for a TV antennae, to raise or lower it? Maybe aftermarket? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

This is my Full Monte. If I could stay home long enough I might be able to finish it up.

Ah, 1967. Oh, wait, that's our year! And a sovereign to boot.

I've got a few extra parts, not many. Let me know what you need.

I'd go ahead and shoot for new axles while you're at it. Yours are looking preeeeettttty low to the ground. Andy at Inland has them. Call him to ascertain size.

Spacely Sprockets the Galaxy's finest sprockets. Watch Working for Mr Spacely.

It was part of an accessory TV antenna. It might have been installed by the factory, more likely a trailer dealer or aftermarket source. But it is a genuine period accessory.

The sprocket or cog was for turning the antenna to line it up with the broadcasting station for best reception. There should be a crank or handle on the inside with a dial showing all the points of the compass. A 20th century antique from the olden days when TV was broadcast from land based towers in analog form.

Andy: After more looking at the crank, you are right that it is for the TV antenna. I still need to call you to order some new windows and my new axles!

Minno: Yeah, I was thinking that is an odd place for it also. More curious than anything if it was original.

Aerowood: I read through your thread a few days ago and I wish I could work with metal like you do. Your trailer is looking incredible! What a small world and it is a little known fact that all good things start in Abilene!

SilverHoot: Nice to meet another '67 owner.

eubank: Yeah, my pile keeps growing. I don't suppose anyone wants an original oven or furnace? At the moment I am needing a few windows and Aerowood has pointed me in the right direction to repair my front banana wraps. I actually talked to Andy a few weeks ago about new axles, but just haven't called him to place the order yet.

Ganaraska: I guess that shows my age that my first thought wouldn't have been for an antenna. The sprocket and crank do look period and the little plastic thing located on the exterior next to the sprocket threw me.

Does anyone have a picture of what the original refrigerator configuration looked like? The PO of my AS had removed the original fridge and strapped a dorm style 4-5' fridge to the wall.

Also, as I am doing all of this demolition I am obviously wearing a good respirator, but are there any materials that I should be careful about in this '67 (i.e. asbestos)? The flooring looks like regular linoleum to me, but just curious.

I attached some pictures of my progress removing the existing kitchen this evening.

Just a suggestion, ask my how I know, but make sure your mark each bulkhead rail as to its exact location, that way when you put all your walls back in the rivet holes will line up with not problem. Also suggest that you be very picky about bagging and labeling all the small parts. 9 months from now you may not remember which cabinet hinge went where. Sounds elementary but it is easy to get excited and in a hurry to get it all apart to fix it and not take the time to really label, bag, and segregate all the small parts. It till save you hours when you start putting it all back together. When you make pictures of your work make 2 times a many as you thing you need, get everything from every angle.
Have fun.

Welcome to the Forum and good luck with your resto.

Check out this website for pics of your fridge placement, and most other interior stuff you might need.

67Sovereign

I didn't realize Airstream flip flopped most everything in the trailer from 66 to 67.(mine's a 66). Interesting!

68 TWind: That is good advise. I have been marking everything that I am keeping, but this is the first time that I have had to deal with removing items from the skin. The curb side bulkhead was in pretty bad condition, but the street side was in great shape. I will be building all new cabinets and have been taking a ton of pictures and measurements. I am sure it will still not be enough when I come back through during the construction phase.

airstream66: Thank you for the link. That really helps!

Is there a dial and crank on the inside of the trailer for turning the antenna? There should be.

I've got one on my trailer and mean to keep it whether it works or not. Just for the nostalgia kick.

Cory, Most of the time the flip/flop has more to do with where the trailer was built. California trailers were opposite interiors to Ohio built ones. Almost reversed images of each other. Happy Trails, Ed

Vhariable,

Forgot to send this link to you. TomW did a fantastic job on his 67 Overlander and there is a ton of info on his site that might help you.

There sure was and I found it last night. At first I missed it as it was hidden behind a curtain. The crank and sprocket are all that is remaining of this antenna assembly.

I have the optional bunk beds in my trailer, but am missing one of the metal frames. Does anyone have a frame that they would like to sell?

Our 67 still has the crank to turn the tv antenna. And it still turns just fine. And it still has the original antenna. And it still works, too.
