USB ports

Hi. I have a 2016 22' Bambi sport. It has 6 USB ports and I can't find any information about them. A couple will charge the phones. Some seem to do nothing. What am I missing? Four are next to the bed and 2 are next to the radio. Any information will help. Thank you.Click image for larger version

I am not sure if this link will work. There is a thread that is titled USB smelling/ smoking or something like that...

You know they run from your 12 volt system. They are cheaply made. You can replace them with a better quality device. BlueSea, a marine accessory company has them.

My wife will not charge her iPhone on them. She had a phone fry while connected to the usb located near bluray player. I charge my older samsung on it. Newer phones like more power these days... so the jury is out if it will charge new samsung 10 effectively.

You have to remove the cabinetry to access the back of the usb. They are held in place by a plastic nut. It's not too difficult to do.

In theory, they all should work.

Good Luck.

Hi

They are basic "dumb" USB outlets. Many newer devices are looking for "smart" outlets that do various fancy things to increase charge rates. Those devices will not work very well on the simple outlets. One of the things the smarts do is to regulate how much power is pulled. With a dumb outlet it is possible for a device to pull to much current (it shouldn't, but some do) and fry the outlet.

Most of the outlets I have seen have a LED on them that lets you know (maybe) if they are up and running. Assuming yours are like that, no LED means they either have fried or have lost connection to the 12V empire. Loss of connection could be due to a loose wire / blown fuse / tripped breaker.

Bottom line is that the stock outlets should be fine for charging a phone overnight. If you need to power up a laptop computer and do video editing with it, you likely will need something a bit more sophisticated.

The stock outlets are cheap and will burn out. Replacing them is easy and replacement parts can be found on Amazon.

Some members here have upgraded the USB outlets to the standard 12v cigarette lighter socket because that socket is actually more versatile; more devices will plug into it, including USB adapters (and also the new USB-type C adapters which can provide more than 5 volts)

Funny how the 12 volt socket, invented in the 1880s will outlive the USB-type A socket.
