On my unloaded sport 22 I was at @33% on both axles of TV and trailer, TV is 2018 f150 3.5 ecoboost. Towing on the ball with no WDH. I need to get my tongue weight up a smidge but it towed well empty and only @7% tongue weight.

Our 2015 Sport 22FB weighed 4040 lbs Loaded for travel with a full fresh water tank.

You should be weighing your set up with your trailer and truck fully loaded for travel including vehicle occupants, gear and a full tank of gas.

For the Sport the 600 tw / 6000 lbs version looks perfect. However there a few of the higher capacity hitches on the local used market. Some half the cost of the new 600 hitch. Would there be any issues with using a higher rated hitch on our 3500lb trailer? Any performance issues? Are there any concerns with using a used hitch?

Thanks!
If you get an f150 I wouldn’t get a WDH until you weighed it. I doubt you need a WDH for a 16 foot with an f150.

The WDH fan club may think so but real world numbers and ford engineers are what you should be going by. I’ve towed a 16 on vacation with my f150 and it towed fine. I also towed my new 22 on the ball and have CAT scale numbers to back up that no WDH is needed.

The WDH fan club is strong with their opinions but I’d try on the ball first.n

You may not need WD, but would be better off with some sway control. Many hitches like Equalizer have anti-sway as part of the WD setup, whereas others such as Eaz-Lift can be installed with only the friction sway control.

Congrats on your Bambi 176 purchase. I love mine and in New England it is a lot easier to get her in and out of tight places/campgrounds. I just have sway control on mine, usually tow with a full tank of water to put weight on the hitch. I towed pretty locally for a season with nothing but added a Husky sway control bar in preparation for longer hauls in sketchier situations. I loosen it/remove it when parking. I don't think you'd regret using an F-150 as a TV.

Good Evening Bambi Forum,

I am towing a 2017 Bambi Sport 22fb with a 2015 Honda Pilot. It should be noted that I just moved up from a 2018 AS Basecamp that towed like a dream on a standard hitch.

Though I have the Blue Rhino WDH that the larger unit came with, I wanted to test the stability of the larger unit without the WDH. So I took the journey from Seattle to Portland and back this weekend sans WDH.

Initially I was going to test the WDH in one direction and the standard hitch in the other, but the ride down with the standard was so smooth and I was too lazy to engage in the additional set up required by the WDH when I broke camp in Portland.

Suffice is to say, I am absolutely certain I need to test the WDH on a future trip so as to have a decent comparison. However I am able to confirm a very stable and manageable ride back and forth between Seattle and Portland using a 2015 Honda Pilot AWD, going no more than 57 MPH towing a 2017 Bambi Sport 22fb in somewhat moist conditions.

I will keep you posted on the WDH test.

Awesome glampman, I too had similar results towing a 22fb on the ball only with an f150. It towed nice through the mountains too. It would be interesting to weigh your setup with each. I used a CAT scale at a truck stop and it was kinda fun.

Overrated equalizer hitch on sport 16? Any issues?

Glampman,
FWIW, I towed my 2015 22FB for a year on just a ball hitch with my 2013 Honda Ridgeline and thought it pulled ok. Then I put an Andersen No Sway WD hitch on it and the ride and control was noticeably better. I’m sure you will notice a better ride with a properly installed WD hitch.

Kanusport is correct in recommending the use of a Cat scale to tune your set up. Make sure you are fully loaded with gas, water, gear and passengers when you do so.

Multiple passes thru the scale will probably be required as you adjust where you put your gear to get your set up level and weight safely below the payload of your Pilot and within the limits of both the AS and Pilot axles.

Safe travels.

I couldn’t tell from the photo. Are you using two friction sway controls? I can only see the RH unit mounted upside down.

I have a complete Eaz-lift setup (1000lb torsion bars) with two sway controls. I was planning to use only one of them with the new 22FB.

I second that opinion. No WD or sway bar needed with my F150 for my Sport 22.

I towed our Sport 16 on the ball, no WD setup, behind a Chevy Suburban and it did fine.

I did use a sway bar.
