Connecting two separate Zamp Solar Suitcases

How would I go about physically connecting two separate Legacy Zamp Solar Suitcases routing them through the Zamp quick connect on the trailer tongue.

I now have a 120 watt suitcase looking to maybe purchase one equal or greater wattage used or new suitcase.

Thanks
Ken

you can plug 1 suitcase into the ZAMP plug on your battery box and the other one: buy a pigtail that has the battery clamps on one end and the quick disconnect (that matches your ZAMP cord) on the other end.... hook this panel up to your battery.

Call AM Solar explain what you have and they should be able to get you the part you need.

I bought 2 Zamp Obsidian 100W panels from them. 1 has the controller and 1 doesnít. There is a pigtail where I just tie the non-controller into the 1 that has the controller. The 1 with the controller then plugs into your Zamp input to the batteries on your Airstream. Gives me 200W of portable solar in addition to my 250W on the roof.

This works for me as I can also use the non-controller panel to charge my Yeti Goal zero portable lithium battery that already has its own solar controller built in.

Do a search on amazon for "SAE Connector Splitter". Should be about $9. This will allow you to combine the two suitcases in parallel and plug into the Zamp SAE connector. This assumes each of your suitcases has it's own controller as that connector on the tongue goes directly to the battery (unlike the connectors on the roof which would go through a controller)

Welcome Aboard..👍

I used a two into one SAE harness.

POI the ZAMP polarity connector is required because of how Zamp wires the system. I charge thru the 7pin umbilical directly to the batt's.

Hey Robert, I have a question for you. When you charge thru the 7 pin how does that effect the victron bmv 712? Will the monitor still read correctly? Thanks Scott

Generally speaking if all your connections to the negative side of the battery bank go through the shunt you can have as many sources feeding the positive side as you want. The Victron reads the current through the shunt, and if all power is flowing through it you should be good to go.

Just call Zamp, tell them what you have and what you
want to do.

You simply need a ďYĒ parallel combiner cable adapter (female to 2 male). You can get from Zamp, but probably cheaper from AMSolar.com ($25). Female connects to charge controller, each solar panel connects to the male ends. I leave the adapter with the panel with the charge controller, and simply plug/unplug in the non-controlled panel. I have two Obsidian 100w panels which have zippered pouches to hold the charger and cables, which is very convenient.

If you donít have one (or two) yet, I would also suggest getting an 15í extension cable while youíre at it, cheaper at AMSolar ($33). Zampís 15í extension is twice as much, coming with a fuse which I donít need with my panel setup.

Hope this helps

Using Y connector with 2 solar suitcases

So is it better to keep both controllers working when plugged into a Y connector into the batteries? I have the option of disconnecting one of the suitcase controllers and then having both suitcase panels funnel into just one controller , then into the battery.

I left mine as delivered...that way I can easily deploy just one 180w panel if I want.

I am not a fan of multiple controllers in one system. So, my suitcase was modified with connectors at its controller. I bypass it. My AS was modified with a pigtail to the onboard victron controller. The suitcase controller is hooked up only when I use the suitcase for a stand alone battery...like a boat, etc.

1+1 <> 2 when it comes to solar panels

If the Zamp suitcases are different models definitely contact Zamp for a recommendation. Connecting different PV panels in series or parallel can potentially impact the overall efficiency dramatically, in some cases almost negating the fact that you have two. Zamp can provide a wiring recommendation based on the characteristics of the models you have.

Before getting my second 180, I pared the 140 I already had, worked fine.

I'm guessing your first panel has a controller, just buy the second without and plug the one without into the one with the controller and plug the one with the controller into the trailer plug.

What if both suitcases have controllers? I am looking at a 140 watt and I now have a 120 watt. To further complicate I have a Zamp 90 watt on the roof ( 3 plug-in adapter on the roof and Zamp plug by the propane bottles ) I believe that there isnít a problem with the roof mount , because the portable will take precedence if it receives more sun. Thanks.

You are fine if they both have them, some may say they will "fight" each other, but i dont believe that is the case.
If you are buying a new panel, it doesn't need a controller.

I have a single ZAMP 260w portable, love it. Powers all the normal chargers, TV, stereo, movies, lights, furnace fans, no issues. Eight nights boondocking in N Idaho last September
