Closet to bedside stand modification

We have owned our 16' Bambi since 2014 and enjoyed many trips in it. While we feel the camper provides all we really need, and we appreciate the versatility it's small size affords, we have always felt that the bed was a little tight for the two of us.

Since we never really used the closet, we decided to remove the closet wall closest to the bedroom and turn the closet into a bedside stand cupboard. The bedside stand is at the same height as the cover for the water heater. The unused portion of closet door was cut up and became shelves in the cupboard.

I moved the bedroom light switch to above the usb ports by the bed, and the closet light was put out of service and coiled up below the false floor in the closet/cupboard.

This change gives room to extend arms/elbows over the new bedside stand which provides a few more inches of bed space. We also like having a surface next to the bed for night tome phone storage or daytime place to put a drink when lounging.

Mostly we like the open feel it provides and the ability to see more of the trailer and out more windows when in the "bedroom."

Nice job. I like the idea, but don't think I could sacrifice the closet space. If you want to continue improving the "open feel", remove that behemoth of a microwave. I removed ours in preparation of installing the smaller unit Airstream puts in the 2016. What a difference. When the smaller unit I ordered came in, I just stuck it on a self in the garage.

Thanks Peanut, Good idea on the microwave.

I did extend he closet rod to the back of the camper so I really didn't give up any space to hang clothes . . . they're just out in the open. We like having the longer rod available for temporary hanging of towels, etc.

Since we added some shelves to the lower part of the closet (now cabinet) we feel like we actually gained usable space. The top shelf can be accessed by removing the top so it's a good place to store cans.

Looks really good, I like the idea.

I'm planning to add some shelves in the closet of my 16' and I hadn't thought of putting small shelves on the bottom like you did. It looks like that will actually add quite a bit of storage. Thanks!

as22FB storage additions

we added
  • extra drawer and power connection bed side area
  • new shelving and lighting to the pantry
  • new shelving and lighting under the kitchen seating area

shelf is just 1/2 melamine, with a 3/4 wood lip so items don't slip off
lighting is 12 V led strip lighting with inline switch ie switch is right by the opening

easy weekend job in or 22FB

That’s awesome! Does it make it feel less cramped in bed now that you have that extra bit of space to extend your arms out? Great job!

Love it. We removed the microwave as well. Really opened up the kitchen area.

Yes Meadowlark, the bed does feel more spacious - both physically because of the place to put arms . . . and visually. It's nice to be able to see the front door and the table when laying in that left side. For some reason it just feels like better feng shui.

Hey we're practically neighbors! If you'd like to take a look sometime send me a private message with your contact info and we can connect.
