Another Solar question....

I have a 120W portable solar panel which I haven't used yet but will soon. Is having a controller mandatory? For example, can we hook up the panel and then just periodically check the battery level indicator in the AS and unplug the panel when the battery level is showing at or near capacity?

No, controller regulates voltage and amp out out to protect the battery. Most panels can run as high as 20 volts which would not be good for the battery.

You want a controller.

Without one the panels will put out 17-18v to the battery which is too high for lead acid batteries. Charging at 17-18v will damage your batteries.

Thanks for the quick responses. Now follow up question: with a 120W panel, is there a specific spec controller I should get?
