Music Festivals and Airstreams

One of my favorite activities is to boondock at a music festival. For most festivals you can camp right on site. However for some it may require camping off site and driving to the festival. I did this a few weeks ago when I went to Floydfest at milemarker 170.5 on the Parkway. I ended up camping at Rocky Knob campground (167.0) and driving to the festival every day.

I am planning on going to Music On The Mountaintop : Home this next weekend. This festival is in Boone, NC and will have some terrific bands- Railroad Earth, Sam Bush, the infamous Stringdusters and many more. I plan on camping at the Julian Price campground on the Parkway and driving to the festival everyday. Come join me if you would like to hear some great music.

Here is a music festival you might be interested. My son has used my Airstream twice to attend this event.

Next year, try the 4&20 Blackbird music festival... it should be sometime in late July of 2012 in Weed, California. There's an RV park within bicycle distance, (1/1/2 miles). And if you talk to some folks in town, you may be able to park right down town at somesome house, or Business. We stayed at the Friendly RV park and rode our bicycles to and from....

They have 5 venues...four indoors, and one outdoor stage, with 50 bands playing all day until late at nite... thru the weekend. This was the first year, so next year should be bigger. Also, there's a hotsprings/campground just outside of Weed in the Edgewood area, (4 or 5 miles?)....Stuart Springs. Kind of a low key "Hippie Heaven".

Music Festivals and Airstreams

We are limited to music festivals in the SE. Two great ones are the French Quarter Festival and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. The French Quarter RV park is practically in the French Quarter so you can walk or bike to the French Quarter Festival and either bike or take a shuttle bus to the Jazz Festival. You can't go wrong with either one. There's plenty more.

I forgot to mention one of the best, the Savannah Music Festival, which will be March 22-April 2, 2012 in of course, Savannah, GA. Very good stuff here blues, jazz, and everything in between.

Wife and I are headed to the Aspen Jazz festival over Labor Day weekend. Have resv at CG near Aspen, looking forward to a little rock, jazz and country music as part of a 3 day party. On tab is Steely Dan, Michael Franti and Spearhead and the Zach Brown Band plus others.
Hope to see you there!

I didn't think you would tow your Airtream, (AS), all the way from Virginia... I posted intel for all the AS folks out there who live in California & Oregon who may want to go next year.

But, that would be cool if you did come out to sunny Califoria.... I think you would have a great time out here.

No problem towing from here in VA to the Pacific Coast. We had a great time in British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon this Spring. The journey if part of the fun, seeing things along the way. We will pull to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in October. The AS is designed to travel, so we do it. Thanks for the invite Trex.

Music Festivals and Airstreams

Ya the big pickle of all music festivals, hands down will be SXSW, Austin, Texas March 9-18. The bands playing have not been announced. If I didn't have a separate trip already planed for this area I would be going. SXSW (South by Southwest) Music Festival, Austin, Texas. Austin has lots of top flight RV parks but you better get your reservation in very very early.

You might consider the Florida State Bluegrass Festival in April. My brother and I went this year and had a blast- and talk about cheap- Tickets for the 3 day event were only $15 and dry camping was $5/day. On Saturday we saw Cherryholmes, Kenny & Amanda Smith, Valerie Smith & Becky Buller and Mountainheart. It is in Perry, Fl. Here are some photos.

Music Festivals and Airstreams

Well as you can see from the posts, the music festival that most appeals to you will depend on what music you like. If you like multiple types of music then great, you will have more festivals to choose from. Some festivals (such as the New Orleans Jazz Festival) are really just big music festivals and offer a wide variety of music to choose from. All over the country there are music festivals that you and your Airstream can get within striking distance of.

Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion

There is a great music festival going on this weekend in Bristol, VA/TN. Here is the link:

Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion | Celebrating Bristol's Music Heritage | State Street | Historic Downtown Bristol, TN/VA

I will be camping at Sugar Hollow Park. Anybody interested? It should be a great time.

Another good Bluegrass Festival is the Boxcar Pinion Festival at Raccoon Mtn in Chattanooga. I have been volunteering at this festival for almost 20 years now, and it just continues to get better. You can find them at boxcarforeverbluegrass.com.

Come on out and join us!

You're welcome Suzz... Here's their web site from last year, also they have a Facebook page. The Official 4and20 Blackbird Music Festival

As of today, they haven't updated their site for 2012, but you should be able to contact them through their web site, if you're interested... Please post, if you hear any updates about next year's festival.

PS, in the 90's I lived in Lake Shastina, (9 years).

This park is great for those in the SE. Several different venues throughout the year are just a beautiful place for us to meet up and show off our aluminum.
