shopping for a unit to join at unit rallies

My wife and I are deciding if we are going to join the WBCCI and want to shop a few unit rallies to meet members and "kick the tires" of a unit rally.
We live in the very north east corner of GA and the Georgia unit is having their rally in Helen (Top of Georgia) and the Western North Carolina Unit is having their rally in Maggie Valley both under an hour from our home base.

My question is do all unit rallies have open houses for people to drop by and visit? Because of other commitments we can't spend the night and towing our AS just to prove we have one seems crazy! If any one from one of these units could let me know more I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Can Not give you any information on the WBCCI units down there other than to say the folks at TOG are the friendliest we have ever camped with. What I did want to say is how much we enjoyed travelling through your neck of the woods. The scenery is spectacular and the people are marvelous. We hope to return again someday. By the way I give you credit for hauling a 31" trailer around on those roads.

Thanks for the kind words. We haven't had any problems towing on the roads here, we did find the bumpiest roads ever this summer near Jackson Mississippi. We really had the old girl bounceing all over the road. Please let us know when you will be back down this way. Maybe we can share a couple of stories around a campfire.

I would definately do it . I did the same thing and it turned out great . If by chance you don't get a warm reception , you will know what not to join , and you will have only wasted an afternoon . Good luck

Not every Unit has an formal Open House at every rally.

It appears you have a 1973 trailer which qualifies you as "vintage". The VAC rallies (IntraClub, not a Unit) almost always have Open Houses, if not formal and promoted as a public event, they're typically continuous to rally particiapnts and potential members. The main difference is, VAC rallies are typically once or twice a year within a multi-state Region and Unit rallies are smaller and occur in some units on a monthly basis or more frequently. Of course, some Units tend to have a higher ratio of vintage trailers than others...so are more receptive to the impromptu open house scenario.

Regardless, any Airstream gathering should welcome you to visit and certainly invite you to hang around for an afternoon or happy hour! If not, keep on looking...every Unit, Region and ??? has they're own personalities. There's bound to be one out there that meets your ideals...

Thanks for the info. Because of weather and kid issues we didn't make the rallies they were hosting but we will give them a call and see what we can learn. I am trying to swap some off days to get to the georgia falll leaf forum rally hope they don't run out of space.

Spartan let me know what you learn, we too are in the same boat(AS) in your neck of the woods. I probably wont be done with my resto until late October. I kow there is a rally scheduled for Palmetto Cove near Table Rock in Pickens, S.C. and I'd like to be able to wander through and meet some folks there.

Will do, its posted on the rally Calendar as the SC State Rally October 18th. It also shows that no onw is signed up at this time, this could be normal, I just dont know. I should pass by the campground this week in my travels and I'll see what I can find out there as well. I'm working on a 27' 1969 Overlander. It goes by the welding shop this week to give the steps some support, and some attn to the rear storage at the back bumper. Then its a Pergo floating floor, and load the kids and some groceries! We've been camping with a good friend who has a '52 Spartanette, (AWESOME!) and he wouldnt let us go with him another season in fiberglass. So the 69 came available the Jayco has been sold, and I have another hobby. I also picked up a 75 31foot sovereign. Not sure what to do with it yet, may just get a bigger toy box! I tried to explain to my wife that with 2 kids we should leave a camper to each of them.

Camperski,
Let me know if you plan to attend. I do know that there is a great Forum rally in Hiawasee Ga that you may enjoy better. I am trying to swap off days to attend. We also own a 1955 Spartan Royal Manor, we owned it before our airstream. The Spartan is on a great piece of property and that is were it will stay. The Spartan is what is called a park model. Since we own a 31 foot AS I think it is a great size especialy with kids.

Nick why not make reservation for a site now then if you can't make it you can always cancel. There are some cancelation fees but it beats not haveing a site if you do get off.----pieman

Spartan, hope your having some luck. We have been planning on a maiden voyage to Banner Elk since we didn't see nay interest for the SC Rally. Well I drove past this morning(very early)and the place is packed. I'll at least stop in this weekend, if we continue to have a child under the weather in morning, I may see if we can get a site up there for one night just to pull it somewhere!

Camperski, We just got back from our first Forum rally and I can now say with out hesitation that the only "membership" I need is to belong to the forum and to attend forum rallies. I am so sorry that we did not let you know about the rally at the Georgia Mountain Fair grounds, we are planning to have another the 3rd weekend in April. I work weekends more then I like to admit, but we can have a rally of two any time your up for it, if I have the weekend off. Please mark your calendar and plan on attending our spring rally. 40 AS in a single place and the best people/food ever!!!!!!!

Sure! while there were none there this time, I had as much interest in my Spartan we are re-doing as in the Airstream we were living in. One couple was in a fifth wheel on their way to Florida for the winter. Taking a peak at 30 + AS gives you lots of great ideas and in our case we know we have the right AS for our family. Although if I had 70K I didn't know what to do with the 2005 front bed sure was cool.

Congratulations. We will be in Bryson City NC November 18-22 doing some more work on our 1955 Royal Manor. We are going to gut the trailer and start over. We are going to camp in our Excella at the KOA in Cherokee, if you want to poke around another Spartan PM me and we can set up a time to meet.
