60 is fine. The worst area is the Salt River Canyon which is located between Showlow and Globe. It is alot of down to the river and alot of up getting back out. It has great views, unless you are driving .

Richard---Is the 2007 Balloon Festival artwork you posted earlier, the official poster for this year's event? If so, someone has shirts for sale. Perhaps the 4CU group should use this as our official shirt for this rally, especially since our own cowboy appears to have modeled for this. Whatsyathink?

must be sunday
Lordy...leave town for a short week to attend the RMVAC rally and it takes me half an hour to catch up on the posts...
I think I'll be able to bring a small keg of Flat Tire(is that Belgian enough, k10?) Does anyone have a plastic half-tub to ice it down with...? Should I bring more than five cups? Hawaiian shirts are western, aren't they?

That is the offical poster for this year. I have not seen it on any clothing items yet. They do have this one on shirts:

I have to say it was very worth it - don't know if you know this, but they have some really powerful telescopes out there - REALLY REALLY cool to see. The road is flat and wide, VERY washboardy (if thats a word) so as I said if you have the time and patience, and I'm not kidding, I think I did about 10-15 mph the whole way.

Grant's late, I suspect...
We're still in, though in moment of weakness I accepted a job offer to "suspend" retirement and consulting and labor in an office again for a couple years.. Job starts in mid-September, 5 days a week... Will have to take "vacation" for ABQ...
That said, we will probably (no reservations or mapquest charts yet..) land in Grant's late Thursday, after leaving work Weds afternoon sometime and trying to get somewhere near Bakersfield that night... We will also blast off to head directly home, rather than cruise gently past Grand Canyon and Sedona, as originally contemplated...

Gail and I plan to join the group on the fly at the National Trails Highway (Route 66) on ramp about 5 miles west of Fenner Wednesday morning. If we miss the convoy 'er caravan we will catch up in Williams Wednesday evening. If anyone has a real radio (we don't got no CB) we will be monitoring 146.520 and the Kingman repeater on 146.760.

Contact Ken J, he is running the rally. I think it is full right now, but he may have a standby list.

Pat and A'25, Gail and I just returned from a week in the Airstream so someone may have answered by now but we will put in our two cents. We took the approximately 21 mile route 57 in from the south in 1999 with our ponderous SOB motorhome, a 1979 24 ft Class C. My sister did tell us our back bumper touched down going through a couple of the dry stream crossings and we did squish through the crust on one of the muddy areas but otherwise no problems. The road at that time was marked "Not Maintained for Motorvehicles" but we thought we would try it since it was much shorter than driving around from the south. When I asked the ranger at Chaco what was our options for roads out of there he said not to take the southern route, we couldn't get through in a motorhome. We told him we had just driven in on it and it was fine but decided to take the norther route out. In reality it was much worst and at the time I think longer. Imagine an extremely rough, washboard, potholed dirt road. That was the northern route. The southern route was much smoother and was not potholed, probablly because it get less traffic.
In retrospect I would take the southern route again with the old MH which had much more ground clearance than newer models. I would not take our 25' CCD because it would likely drag in several spots and might damage the black/grey water piping but I would not hesitate to hauling our 1960 18 footer in when we have it completed since it has more ground clearance and the cabinets will likely be more durable than in new Airstreams.

See map.
You could call Chaco and ask when was the last time that the roads were bladed. The longer the time, the worse the washboarding.
Check the weather. Some of the unpaved sections have a high clay content and rain can make them very slippery.

The only space available is across the street from us - it won't be with the group, but you can join us for all activities. Its cheaper across the street, but can be a bit of a dust bowl. If we have cancelations we can move across the street with us - or you can be on our waiting list and you will be #4.

mr moto,
i don't know a thing about radios, but i know were close to having us a convention; and seeing as i know you, i think you should be placed under the shade tree, next to the pool, and behind the cafe w/ the usual suspects.

You can join Pat and I in the shade spaces next to the pool behind the cafe.
Lovely views from there.
(BTW, it doesn't take much to bribe the ring master...a little Patron will do it)

Been reading through all the posts from the beginning this thread ...unfortunately it was being planned just as we were entering the AS crowd and we didn't get in on the Balloon Festival doins' until it was too late. It should be a riot and I'd love to see the group enter the grounds en masse...what a sight...not to mention participating in one of the biggest events held in the Southwest. I love that members are caravaning from CA and points west, and picking up even more members along the way to ABQ through northern AZ... Perhaps if this happens again in 2008 we will be able in join in the fun...some of you southern CA folks could go the southern route through Tucson, west on I-10 to I-25 in NM and north to ABQ...we could come at it from all directions! Have a blast and be sure to take lots of pictures to share with us...

TB,
while it's not my rally, theres room across the street. you could still be in on the fun. my experience also tells me were going to have a drop out rate of about 10% just prior to the event. so if you want, contact ken j, and either put your name on the waiting list, or camp across and join us.
sorry i can't place you w/ beachfront, poolside, or cafe close.

Kevbo...
Well thanks for the invite...that's swell of ya. We'll think about it...it's something we could look into... unfortunatley, it's more a thing of timing than anything else...you know, that 4-letter word "work"...but we shall see! If we can make it a possiblity, I'll give ken j a holler.
It's a cryin' shame that there aren't any beachfront, poolside, or cafe close sites open!

Mike - I was looking at a video on the SaveWally website, it was an interview with Fred C about the history of the club. They showed some vintage units and I thought the MH in one of the shots was yours. I need to get to the RM-VAC thing one year. I hear it is alot of fun.
About the fiesta, are you going straight to the fiesta (I can not spell albaqueque, that big city in new mexico) or are you goint to lay over thursday night at the Grants KOA?
As far as social details, ask Kevin. That's why he gets the big bucks!
That hawaiian shirt better have smiley pockets....
