Your never too old to learn.

2air, thanks the good news is that I'm still teachable. WE have an old Rand McNally map that we have been using for years. One of my favorite words has all ways been: assume. Because I have assumed many things through life, only to have learned that I didn't learn at all. I just got done looking a about 15 different maps. You got my interest up. The bottom line is - there is no standard. Secondary roads can be in red, blue, yellow, and lots of variations. Old Highways fits for the description of where we want to travel. But it would nice to have some catchy fraze. Let's see: Pot Hole Heaven, Snakey way, Off the Beated Path, One Liner, ??? Do you have any ideas. Second thought, We're not Off Roaders. Maybe Inbetweeners. How about stuck in our ways?

Hello, Don and Claudia. Your saga is taking on a shape of its own! If your trip through the midwest varies a little north of where it now shows, we are in the middle of Missouri and would love to host you for an overnight stay. We're not fancy, but we have a pond you can fish, and we do enjoy a home grilled dinner with tasty wine or good beer while we sit out and smile at our Airstream in the back yard I know Gypsy would love a little company. If you take in the Moraine View Rally in Illinois, we'd be on the way, just a byway off I-70. Cheers to your developing story! ~G

Maxandgeorgia, thanks for the response. You are the second person who has requested a move in your direction. It sounds great. I'll work on the map tonight and make the changes. Soon I'll be able to suggest a time-line and let you know when we will be in that area. If you keep watching this discussion and the Blog, it should help you have an idea of when we will get to your area. Also We will be on Vintage Airstream Podcast on a regular basis, so you can find out what's happening there. This is fun the map keeps changing. Just what we had hoped.
Thanks again
Don & Claudia.

Don: I would like to hook up with you somewhere southeast of Bakersfield, and travel as far as Laughlin/Oatman or Kingman.

Times, Places, and Dates for CONVOY

The following is the beginning of the times and places for the CONVOY Trip. I would like to give a big thanks to all who have responded. As the date gets closer the numbers are getting bigger. For those who have made suggestions and made offers of places and times, look at the map and you should see your area on the map. If you suggested a rally or other event in your area that is the time we hope to be in your area. If you have questions don't hesitate to send a PM or post on this thread. You can also make entries on the Blog. I'm checking each several times a day.
Here is the beginning of the time line and the Map.
Don

Travel “CONVOY” America
The convoy is progressing nicely. Similar to the way water runs down hill, I have been creating this trip based on, not the part of least resistance, but by the suggestions of Airstream forum members and their suggestions and offers of traveling along. This map shows where the trip is now going to travel. There may be small changes in this plan, but time and distance necessitate the finalizing process. As anyone who has traveled knows, plans change based on many factors. So updates will occur as needed. The part of the trip from Topeka, Kansas has not been planned as yet. The general plan is to follow the Louis and Clark trail after Kansas.

Following is a list of the map numbers with their proposed time, date, and locations.
  • Yreka; trip begins April 26
  • Redding, CA; refueling stop etc. April 26
  • Eureka, CA; stop over at “sequoiacoast” April 26 – leave on 27th with sequoiacoast to caravan to the Casini Ranch Rally
  • Casini Ranch Rally arrive on April 27th stay through the 29th – leave rally and head south toward Sunnyvale, CA. hopefully with some others heading south.
  • Sunnyvale, CA visit with Son April 29, leave April 30 for Bakersfield, CA area.
  • Bakersfield, CA area – to be arranged – stay in Bakersfield area or southwest of this area on the 30th. Meet up with SnorkyII some where in the area. We’re working on setting up these plans as I write this. I hope you AZ Airstreamers are checking this out because we are heading your way.
I'll try the map in the morning. The internet in my area is not working well tonight.

Convoy

At this time it looks like we will be in the Moraine View Rally in IL. As our route has changed the time-line has fallen back some. I think we will be in your area 5 or 6 days later. I'll try and keep you posted as we go along.
Thanks again for you support and interest in our journey.

Well my water analogy is going to be a good description of the process of planning, changing, and planning again. We may hit another rally before we leave California. This could make some time changes. I'll keep you posted. My feeling in the beginning was that once the date got closer other things would pop up. The process in much like when I would plan trips as a pilot. You would spend a considerable amount of time planning, time, distance, weather, fuel, comfort stops, etc. The moment the landing gear would leave the ground, the plans would change. Some of you pilots out there should understand the special type of "FUN" I'm talking about.

hi don...

the map is starting to look like a figure 8!

with a midwestern intersection....

that is a great idea and could offer more of the heartland...

cool.

the moraine view rally folks are in for a treat.

you might want to make a reservation.
the fee is only 5 dollars and the first nite camping, another 15.
that park tends to fill in the fair weather months...

cheers

Gypsy1, I think the part in NYC will be just an attempt at a peaceful drive by. With traffic and all, I don't know how anything else could work. Then after going outside the city and parking somewhere, coming back to see the Museum. I've driven in the larger cities in the West and over busy bridges. I'm sure it's nothing like downtown NYC. I've flown a small airplane through that area. That was a nightmare. I though if there was enough of us we could ask for a police escort. Maybe if I announce my running for President, that might have a chance of making it happen. What ever happens I'm sure it will be a memorable experience? Who knows I may change my Airstream blue stripe for a nice taxi yellow. Oh on second thought, If I paint the Bambi taxi yellow before we start, We could escort somebody important through the city.

Don & Claudia,

Looks like your trip is firming up nicely. Have a great time at Bass Lake, unfortunately your route is too far north for us to drop by.

Don & Claudia,

That is how rallies are, they just up and change your plans. Unfortunately, we do not have enough vacation time for that rally or we would have signed up. We have many VAC friends who will be there, I am sure that you will have a great time.

I wish I had known you were at Disneyland earlier this year, it is only a few miles from our home.

Bill

Hmmm. Grand Canyon, Bandelier. . .our place in little Ashland, MO, doesn't compare in excitement! We'll claim your overnight here as R & R from your high action stays--we'll order up a starry sky, break out some good liquids, put something tasty on the grill, and kick back and compare favorite travel stories. Looking forward to meeting you. Will you have other caravanners along with you as you cross Missouri? I noticed you were visiting Lewis and Clark sites. We have a couple of documented sites in this area. Would you like to see them while here? ~G

Wow, Great to get you message. I had planned to contact you today and confirm. Thanks for helping my plan work. Yes, we are looking forward on meeting with you and your and enjoying the start. We use to have a place in the hills where there was no light pollution. On a clear night one could walk outside by star light. And the Milky Way looked like brush stroke of tiny stars across the sky. Let's start a PM message so we can make an actual hookup.

Toll roads

Questions for the folks in the East. On our planned map trip. Are any of the roads I have shown on the map toll roads? If so is there a way around them? We would just as soon travel on the older roads anyway. Historical type roads are great.

Go through the woods!

Don,

It looks like stop 6 and 7 are at our place and Colin's - true? Great if so! Your map looks like it goes from our place to Oneonta on the Interstate to Albany and up the Northway? That is 260 miles. I can give you a route from our place through the woods (roads are good) where you will travel Route 12 north into the Adirondack Park and then over through Old Forge (a neat old town), up to Saranac Lake and over to Plattsburgh. It passes directly by the Adirondack museum too! It is only 240 miles, good roads, passing many of State Parks for overnighting too! Let me know - I recommend "Through the woods!"
