Shuttle launch rally
Any interest in getting a group together for the Shuttle Launch 1st week of June? It may be a last time for some time to come.

Melody Ranch,
The answer is yes -- we live in Jacksonville, and a June trip to watch a shuttle launch would be fun.
Please keep me in this loop.
Thanks

There are several campgrounds on US1, you can camp anywhere from Edgewater to Melborne, and watch from your front (or back) window. You get a good view from about T plus 15 seconds until the shuttle goes out of sight. (clear line of sight required, naturally)
Actually going to the space center will be a zoo on launch day, and area businesses tend to charge a premium at the time.

IMHO, the best (and closest) camping location is actually on a beach at Jetty Park campground which is right next to Cape Canaveral. I don't think you can camp any closer than that!
We had reservations for camping there at the last launch which was scheduled for early March 2007 but the launch was canceled. But, we had fun camping there anyhow. I've posted some photos below to give you an idea of the place.
In addition to viewing a shuttle launch, there is great fishing from the pier, views of cruise ships and subs coming and going, super sunrises, lots of beach and wildlife too.

Launch
We have reservations at Manatee Hammock. I did not see the pictures of Jetty Park before I made the other reservations. Jetty Park looks like a great place. Manatee still has spaces available, but did say they would be full for the launch.

Manatee Hammock is nice too and is located on the Indian River. I stayed there last year and would go back again. We tried to get into Jetty Park but they fill up fast.

Manatee or Jetty?
Are there any forum members who have seen or camped at both parks who can recommend one over the other? I understand that Manatee has more shaded sites. Jetty has shaded beach sites but not with full hookups. We're gonna have a large group so a sewer connection is really a must. Jetty being close to the action may be the over-riding factor in it's favor, shade or not. We'd appreciate comments.
Thanks,

I have only been to Jetty and will say there are limited shaded sites. The majority of the sites at Jetty are out in the open. They have limited full hookups but at least have some full hookups. I would choose Jetty only because I enjoy being on the ocean.

Jetty Park Campground bound!
They got us into a site with full hookups at Jetty Park Campground so I reckon we'll count on the ocean breezes to keep us cooled down somewhat. We won't have to fight traffic, can stay four days in case the launch is delayed and enjoy the oceanside environment. I'm certain that a good bath for The Silver Bullet will be needed on our return to the mountains. I understand that Manatee has openings as does a KOA nearby. I hope we see some aluminum and AIR decals down around Titus in a few weeks.
Happy Trails !

Where to camp to watch launch.
Manatee Hamock is a good place to watch the launch because it is closer to the launch pad than Jetty Park. You are across the Indian River Lagoon from the pad, while Jetty Park is several miles south of the launch pad.
The best place to watch the launch is from several public parks along the lagoon in Titusville. However, if you don't get there early, and find a free parking spot, there are private parking lots available that charge an arm and a leg.
I've seen most of the shuttle launches since the mid 90s from Titusville. We usually boondock along the road leading out to the National Seashore. The Seashore is closed 3 days before the launch, but you can still park along the road. Get there early. The view is fantastic !

Thanks Cliff. We may reconsider but because of Jetty's close proximity to the ocean, we may just leave it as it is. Decisions, decisions.

As I mentioned in an earlier post to this thread, we missed the March launch because it was canceled. Hopefully someone will post pics of this event so we can all vicariously enjoy the launch!!!
